Throwing Stick Games

Tell us about a popular parlor game played in a region of your world. What are the rules?   In Chrenada there is a common game of throwing sticks. It is sometimes played for money, in public rooms or taverns, but it is also frequently found in common and noble households as an ordinary pastime.   Throwing sticks are a simple binary system of chance, with flattened oblongs of light wood painted black on one side and white on the other. Sticks are shaken or rolled between the palms and then thrown on the table board or on the floor. The number of light sides and dark sides turned up is then tabulated. Depending on the individual game, the majority of light or dark sides, or the exact numbers of each, determine the winner of each round or cumulative points.   The cheapest sets of throwing sticks are made from lightweight wood scraps, stained on one side, and these may be found in any low public house. These are not always well made or well balanced, or in some houses sticks may have more intentional unbalancing. In fine houses, however, throwing sticks may be made of rare woods, or even Catoblepas ivory.   There are dozens of local variations of throwing sticks games, and travelers are advised to ascertain the rules before joining a game, especially when playing for money.   It is said that Bloody-Neck Jacko lost a favorite island on The Wakari Coast to one of his mates, later turned a rival, in a game of throwing sticks. This state of affairs lasted until Bloody-Neck Jacko declared himself king of the region and killed the mate, reclaiming the island.
