Magitek {General}

Magitek is the term used to refer to any blending of magic with some form of mechanical and artifice that can be used by a wide audience. This differs from other forms of artifice such as magic wands or scrolls that require specific arcane abilities to activate. Keep in mind however that on Yuna there is no true governing body of magic so some individuals may use the term a little more liberally. The Scholomance differs in this as they have very clear definitions for what they consider magitek and what they consider a more traditional spell component or tool.
Additionally since there are many different traditions of magic such as the primal arts of the elves, the divine spellwork of the Necropolis, et cetera there is no single formula for creating magitek. An Airship that uses an elemental skystone embedded in its hull and controlled from the bridge and a lantern that uses bound spirits that come to light with a specific keyword are both examples of magitek.

Magitek & the Precursors

Magitek comes generally two major categories: Precursor and Modern. As pre the name, Precursor Magitek is magitek created by the Precursors. They are relics and artifacts found and activated by explorers, adventurers, and researchers. These tek is always stable, sophisticated, and impossible to reproduce exactly. Both the Scholomance and the Library have open bounties on any Precursor magitek that is discovered though the Scholomance tends to be more aggressive in their acquisition. Through their research they have determined that there did appear to be several different traditions amongst the Precursors when it came to magitek creation with some relics having smooth almost organic shapes while others bear a more geometric style. Several have been found to possess different forms of writing that are still being translated today

Modern Magitek

Modern Magitek is artifice created using modern techniques generally in an attempt to replicate Precursor tek. It is almost always flawed, temporary, and somewhat prone to explosions. While Precursor magitek bears a certain elegance of design, modern magitek is often quite haphazard and even when created to be mass produced (such as the ghost lanterns of the Necropolis), it is clear that each has slight imperfections unique from the others. It is also not unheard of for Engineers to try and combine Precursor magitek with their own. This is met with... mixed results.
