Expensive Pet

Numus: Domestic animals create by Ubuju sigraxes using Breeding Magic (the magic Way created by this specie). They have the general shape of bulldogs but with a big macaw’s beak replacing the mouth. Every single detail of them was designed by the obuju sigraxes to make perfect pets. Numus are a composition of species (I have no idea how many) incompatible with each other, without magic would be impossible to have reproduction between them.

The small ugly things are a invention of Ubuju magic users, sold as a luxurious lap pet. Attentive, extremely good in tune the owner's feelings, slow in their legs but energetic enough to keep children interest.
     Caused surprise when the earthling Vital Ceres of Lutianen, who was the head of Royal Guard at the time, brought one for himself. He kept it in his office in the palace and carried it everywhere.
    Around that time people started to notice how loud those small animals are able to scream when they want to. A useless trait in itself, but they also happen to be smart enough to be tough when to make their scandal.
    That changed the animal's image. Because just every Warrior Caste can tell you a use for an animal that never gets distracted and can awake half the city when he sees a stranger in your absence, or when you are in trouble, or even just tell him to.
    The animal is still a symbol of status among the Noble Caste girls and the rich Merchant Caste ones. He is far too expensive for most Warrior Castes, but City Guard to has the habit to buy as many as they can afford.

Basic Information

Anatomy

They are mostly like mammals, but put eggs and their females produce no milk.       Variate from the size of small dogs to that of middle sized ones. Have four short round leg ending at paws that remember those of elephants. Their eyes can vary a lot in seize and shape, and number, not to mention color; and in some sub-species are totally absent or replaced by small antenas. However, since they are produced as pets and the major client are rich human ladies the most common numus has two large expressive eyes. 
   They are resilient animals, usually reaching two decades of life. Special elixires and magical treatments are available to improve that longevity hundreds of times (what evidently end up being far more expensive than buy a new numus each time yours die from old age).

Only the ubuju know how to breed numus, and that is only done in their cities.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Most numus have big, bat-like ears. Their sense of smell is pretty good, and they have a fine perception of magnetic fields, but the primary sense of those beasts is hearing. They recognize the owner miles distant, walking in the middle of a crowd, from heartbeat alone.  
   There is nothing magic in their capacity of recognize emotions, and share them, but it certainly looks like magic. Designed by breeder sigraxes with the purpose of serve as lap pets those animals have their entire perception sharped to empathy. They are said to "sing" with their owners, with a sense of harmony and creativity that makes some fantasize about the species intelligence. In fact their musical 'talent' is nothing more than well tuned empathy, as proven by the fact that only numus who belong to individuals with musical notions produce melodious songs.          
   The most noticeable capacity of those animals has to do with sound too. It is a loud shout they can produce. 
    When used at its maximum this sound is loud enough to hurt people standing at the side of this animal, and also kill the numus. Is very rare for a animal to reach such extremes, and hurt or even kill himself. Usually they make brief loud cries to ask for help and awake their owners, but without exaggeration.  
   The only magical property related to the animal is the anti-magic on them. Divination spells and other sorts of magic have difficulty to affect the animal, and when they do mostly result in dead. That was the way found by the breeder sigraxes to prevent, or at leas difficult reverse engineering of their magical Way.
