Union Interstellar Nav-ID (NID)

The Union Interstellar Navigation Identification system (called NID or UINID for short) is a standardized classification system used to navigate Union space. It describes linkage, system features, hierarchy, and level of development for specific locales registered by Union. A NID does not need to drill all the way down to the most granular items in space, as exampled below.   SAMPLE NID

00-XXX-000-XX-000-XX

A debris field labeled as stellar body 14 under direct union control, in galactic sector 02 (The Kunlun Line).

02-UCS-014-DF

A habitable planet labeled 04 orbiting a class-2 star with contested status, in galactic sector 04 (The Atlas Line).

04-CCS-001-S2-004-P5

An unidentified stellar body in frontier space (The Annamite Line).

11-UHS-UB

Each section of the ID has a different purpose, described below. NIDs can be any length (up to a certain granularity, usually a planet or asteroid), since bodies can fractally orbit other bodies.   After the Sector and Union code, there is a repeating pattern of Body and Type codes, until the desired target is described.

Sector Code

The first two numbers of the NID are a label to identify a specific galactic sector (See the Starmap for details).
Value Represents
00-99 Sector Number

Union Code

The next three characters of the NID are a general classification of Union's presence in the locale.
Value Represents Description
UCS Union Controlled Space Stellar space that is under the direct control and watch of Union. Most core worlds are under this category.
MCS Member Controlled Space Stellar space that is under the direct control and watch of a Union Member State (such as Harrison Armory or the Karrakin Trade Baronies. These places are still subject to Union's rule, but through the governmental bodies of the member state.
CCS Contested Control Space Stellar space that is registered under Union but is not fully controlled by Union or a single member state. This could be via violent conflict or unfinished colonization.
UHS Unregistered Space Stellar space that is unregistered under Union control, often unexplored.

Body Code

The next three numbers of the NID are a label to identify a specific stellar body within its parent sector, natural or man-made.
Value Represents
000-999 Stellar Body Number

Type Code

The next two characters of the NID are a compound identifier to describe what type of stellar body the prior number is. In the case of a binary star system, both type codes will be represented, the first being the dominant gravitational star, the latter being the lesser.
Value Represents Description
S1 Star - Class 1 The hottest and most intense stars.
S2 Star - Class 2 Stars that are the most suitable to hosting habitable planets. Sol is a Class 2 star.
S3 Star - Class 3 The most inert and coolest stars, often in the later stages of their life.
BH Black Hole Black holes are massive gravity wells formed from collapsed stars.
DF Debris Field A field of debris, natural or man-made.
NB Nebula A cloud of stellar material, often solar nurseries.
RB Rogue Body A body unattached to a sector, often hurdling freely through them.
UB Unregistered Body An unmapped or unregistered body that is unknown in class.
P1 Planet - Class 1 Entirely inhospitable to life.
P2 Planet - Class 2 Incredibly hostile to sustaining life.
P3 Planet - Class 3 Moderately sound at sustaining life, given some measures.
P4 Planet - Class 4 Suitable for sustaining life, given minor measures.
P5 Planet - Class 5 Perfectly hospitable to life give no measures.
OS Orbital Station A station that orbits or maintains position near its parent body.
DC Derelict Craft Refers to both in-tact and destroyed man-made objects. This could be an abandoned freighter, or the remnants of a space battle.
BG Blink Gate The powerful FTL transportation networks that connect Union core worlds.
AS Asteroid A specific piece of natural material, such as a piece of rock or ice. Often found within asteroid fields.
GS Gaseous Field A cloud of gas, either natural or man-made. Usually the results of some reaction.
