Tharizdun

The Chained Dark God, The Elder Elemental Eye, The Chained Oblivion, The Angel Of Irons, He of Eternal Darkness

God of destruction, darkness and insanity. He was a long-forgotten interloper god originating from Agnesia who sought to destroy all that is. He created the Abyss, an act for which he was imprisoned by the gods. His followers hope to set him free.   Originally, he was a Neutral Evil god who betrayed his fellow gods. Having been tempted by the obyriths with promises of unlimited power, he sought out a shard of Pure Evil that he thought could fuel a hate machine of destruction that would put an end to everything but himself. As such, he created the Abyss. In the process, though, it drove him insane and made him Chaotic Evil, and while more powerful than ever was too batshit to control himself. The other gods imprisoned him in chains and cast him into the void, then went back to killing the Elementals and each other. Now he just wants to break free so he can annihilate absolutely everything.

Holy Books & Codes

The Commandments of the Chained Oblivion are:
  • Uncover, restore, and exalt forgotten shrines in his honor.
  • Offer and siphon power to the Chained Oblivion until his liberation comes.
  • Ruin and raze the realms to prepare for the Epoch of Ends.
The creed of the Chained Oblivion is:
Light must be snuffed, perfection decayed, order dissolved, and minds fragmented.
The rest of his religion consists of a sporadic collection of terrible holy texts, secretly guarded even from other sects and detailing terrible rituals and extraplanar horrors.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Their symbol is a Dark spiral or inverted ziggurat. A number of symbols have been utilized by cultists of Tharizdun, but the one that is most used, and the one which geometer spellcasters say is theurgically significant, is a jagged counterclockwise dark spiral rune known as the Spiral of Decay, symbolizing that time is an inevitable descent into entropy. Some of his clerics also use a two-tiered inverted ziggurat, known as the Obex.     Their favored weapon is a Curved dagger (used for sacrifice) or the Spiral of Decay (Whip, which no equivalent weapon exists in human knowledge). Yet another (almost certainly insane) source claims his weapon to be something called a "Check Toee".   Relics:
  • Druniazth. Druniazth, nicknamed the Claw of Tharizdun, is a thermophagic +5 Frost Sword of Wounding forged of blackish ruinite alloy. Being wounded by Druniazth can result in hypothermia and unconsciousness, and the victim is tainted by a measure of Tharizdun's psychic essence, which most readily manifests as nightmares. Note that the name Druniazth is an anagram of the name Tharizdun. Its purpose is to spread a prophecy of Tharizdun's return, and ultimately to unleash him upon the world.
  • Gems of Tharizdun. The 333 Gems of Tharizdun when combined are said to be able to open a portal to release Tharizdun from his prison. The magical properties of individual Gems are not described, but given their combined power and their connection to the God of Destruction one can extrapolate that an individual Gem has one or more portal-themed and/or destruction-themed effects.
  • Spear of Sorrow. The Spear of Sorrow is a +5 Unholy spear made of a black material; the Spear has at least one sorrow-inducing effect and one or more cold-themed effects. Its purpose is to locate and restore that god's ancient and forgotten temples and awaken his sleeping guardians.
  • The Theoparts. Representing Tharizdun's all-encompassing evil, each of the three Theopart artifacts corresponds to one of the three flavors of Evil: Chaotic Evil, Neutral Evil, and Lawful Evil. When brought together the three Theoparts release an avatar of Tharizdun.
  • The Weeping Hexgram. A ten foot diameter black iron ring inset with a bowed hexagram, which seeps blood when exposed to sunlight. Historically, a paladin of Rao broke the ring into three pieces.
  • Scorpion Crown. A gift to a long-gone ruler. Currently lost.

Tenets of Faith

Tharizdun's exact dogma is unknown, as the ages he was imprisoned in the Abyss along with his own growing insanity left him unable to communicate in a meaningful manner. Even when he appeared to his followers, he only spoke to them in the form of a shrieking babble that was impossible for mortals to comprehend. The following are his assumed teachings, followed by his cults.
Channel power to the Chained God, so he can break his chains. Retrieve lost relics and shrines to the Chained God. Pursue the obliteration of the world, in anticipation of the Chained God's liberation.

Holidays

The followers of Tharizdun are few and secretive, and most people do not even know that he was once worshiped. If he has holy days, they are unknown to all but perhaps some of his followers.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

To be freed from his chains.

Physical Description

Body Features

Unlike most deities who take humanoid shape, Tharizdun appears as a dark, amorphous form reminiscent of a sentient sphere of annihilation. Contact with the deity brings insanity and death, and no accurate surviving descriptions or depictions of him remain.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

With his goal of destruction, Tharizdun is Chaotic Evil. Historically, he has been considered Neutral Evil. No beings have encountered Tharizdun for over a millennium, and his alignment can only be inferred from that of his insane followers.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Rao is particularly opposed to Tharizdun. Rao's followers believe that the Crook of Rao was originally crafted by that god for the purpose of banishing Tharizdun's dark forces.
