The Wordless Book

The Wordless Book is an artifact of great power, and as such is very dangerous. It can create gateways into the Vale, turn land to ash, drain the life from any living creature, raise mountains and reduce them to rubble.   The origin of the book is unclear. One legend saya that it was a joint effort between Yiggith and Kratling as a gag gift to their sibling, The Source. The two felt that The Living Flame was too arrogant for his own good and needed some humbling. The book was to take his power away for a time, leaving him helpless to watch as his siblings took their turns playing with reality and existence.   Another legend says that the Wordless Book predates the three major deities Shirantz knows today and was made by a wild sorceress named Maswryn searching for the world's secret knowledge. She collected everything she learned about the planet, magic, life, death, power, people, and more into the book, writing it in her own blood, speaking incantations of power as she did so. In this version of the legend, the pages are said to made from the flesh of children that the Maswryn herself killed and skinned, working the flesh like leather.   Eventually her grotesque methods became too much for others to bear, and they came in force to end her life. It was a pitched battle with magic and weaponry of all kinds being employed. Maswryn was powerful and she stood strong against her foes, but they overwhelmed her through sheer numbers. When they finally subdued her, she was still alive, badly beaten and injured, but breathing.   Before their eyes they saw her wounds begin to heal. They stabbed her then, and flayed her. Then they drowned her and burned her body, scattering the ashes to the winds. The leader of the coalition which defeated Maswryn, a man named Benji Sava retrieved the book and dared to gaze upon its contents. However, instead of malicious spells and diagrams drawn in blood, he found only blank pages. The book contained no words. Still, he decided it must be destroyed and cast it into the fire that had killed its creator. The book didn't burn. He soaked it in blessed water, tore its pages, chopped it with an axe, and still the book showed no sign of damage. Seeing no other option he hid it in a secret location that only he knew. When he died, so did the knowledge of where the book was.   There have been recent rumors that the book has found its way back to the land of the living and has fallen into the hands of a powerful member of The Cult of the Source. If this is true, all of Shirantz must hope that the new owner of the book is not tempted by the power it promises.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The Wordless Book is blank on the inside, which raises the question of how it can be a book at all. But rest assured, it is. This book has a voice and will speak to any it deems worthy of sharing its power. How one proves their worth has been open to debate since knowledge of the book's existence spread.   Some say, you must perform a ritual sacrifice of a child on an appointed day. Others say that you must draw your own blood and spread it on the fleshy pages of the book, while others maintain that there is not way to prove yourself worthy to the book; it either chooses to share its power with you or it doesn't. One thing is for sure, though, if the book exists, and does have the ability to communicate with people, it poses a grave threat to all of existence.
