Job opportunities in Lenthir

Careers

So you want a career in the City of a Thousand Stories? Being the largest city in the Five Nations, Lenthir might also have the most diverse choice of careers in the known world. I've talked to four people in the city about their jobs, and what to expect from these careers.

Meet the People

The Trader
Along the main roads of Lenthir there are always a lot of trader stalls, selling everything you can imagine. We met up with Dunstan Qwell, a seller of Asharian fruits.
The Bartender
Large cities has a lot of taverns. None of them is more visited than the Apprentice's Rest at the central plaza. Moira Gael is the current owner of the popular tavern.

The Librarian
In Lenthir, there's a couple of libraries, but only one with real weight behind it. We managed to get a hold of Aimar Lyari, who works at the library in the Academy of the Arcane.

The Watch Mages
The protecters of the city are a normal piece of the daily life in Lenthir. We met up with Constable Aira Neverra, who kindly gave us some minutes of her time.

Work Time

There are no legal regulation on how much a person can work during a set period of time, so how much time a person would work varies between the career in question and the individual worker.

The Trader
I usually stay until I sell most of my merchandise, but there's almost no point trying to sell fruit after sundown. I guess I usually try to keep open for ten hours, give or take, with a small break before the afternoon rush. Days off? Only when I can afford it. I don't earn money by closing my stall, after all.
— Dunstan Qwell, Asharian fruit trader
The Bartender
I have to be close by from we open until we close, since I'm in charge. Luckily I live on the second floor, so if there is trouble, I can get there pretty quick. We try to keep work days to eight hours a day or less, and try to prevent our staff working more than five days in a row, but when someone is ill, or there's a special day or period, like around graduation, all staff must expect to work more.
— Moira Gael, bartender at the Apprentice's Rest

The Librarian
The library is open from just after the morning's first class until three hours after dinner, so there needs to be at least one librarian at the library at all times. We're five librarians currently, and we split as much as we can. The norm is every other day for seven hours, where it overlaps in the middle of the day so we have time to put books back into shelves and such. We're free to swap hours as we please, so if anything comes up, there's usually not a problem to shuffle us around so we can take a day or two off, but we try to end up with the same amount of hours in the end.
— Aimar Lyari, librarian at the Academy of the Arcane

The Watch Mage
The day watch, where I work most of the time, has a four days on, two days off deal. The days are four hours, then a break, followed by another four hours. The starting time is staggered, so the breaks are scattered over a period of time. We have to make sure that the force is strong enough in case of emergency, so we can't be more than three or so away from the city at any time. And we must always be close enough to our uniform to be able to be changed and ready during an hour if the alarm goes off.
— Constable Aira Neverra, the Watch Mages

Payment

Payment vary vastly from job to job.

The Trader
I can get a decent amount of money during a day's work, but considering that I'd either have to pay someone to supply the fruits to Lenthir, or go to pick them up myself, it's not that much left when the bills are paid. Also, fruit from the Verraja area needs days of transport to get here, and believe me, the magic that goes into preservation of fruits isn't exactly cheap. Though, Verrajan fruits are exotic enough up here to catch a pretty penny, so when all comes to it, I do earn a small profit.
— Dunstan Qwell, Asharian fruit trader
The Bartender
We're lucky up here. This is the watering hole of most of the staff and students at the Academy. Still, we had to stop giving students access to opening tabs, since some of them almost ran us out of business when they suddenly weren't able to pay after all. Almost had to fire some servers back then.
— Moira Gael, bartender at the Apprentice's Rest

The Librarian
Yeah, the pay is good, but then again you need to make sure the students doesn't set fire to the books, or sneak into the restricted books section. I swear to the gods, if they summon another lesser demon in this library, I'll lose my mind.
— Aimar Lyari, librarian at the Academy of the Arcane

The Watch Mage
The pay could be better, I suppose, especially during day time. The ones who are lucky enough to get the Night Watch get paid double, just because they work night. This is one of the safest cities in the world. Nights are so uneventful they're almost boring.
