Session 39.5: The tale of Jagob Leen

Griff and Emir, unable to get useful answers from Gobby turn to Cissa for help. Cissa sadly explains that his name is Jagob Leen and he is from Kennrun in Breland. About 20 years ago, he somehow managed to get into Thrane undetected and ended up in the Spire of Inspiration. He wasn't a bard or any sort of creative. So it was strange that he insisted on remaining there. So Cissa decided to take him to the Heart of the Spire.   Gobby didn't really show much potential as a bard... but it seemed that music jogged his memory. So he'd remain in the Spire, hoping for the right song to come up and help him remember. (Gobby told her this in the Heart, he had forgotten why he was in the Spire before that point)   Whilst in the Heart, Cissa learned that he was once a well off farmer in the Kennrun region. He had a wife and three children. But the war raged nearby and he feared for the safety of his crops.   Gobby became quite worried when the neighbouring farm was attacked by Cyran soldiers so in his desperation he decided to visit a local hag. The hag advised him to slaughter a goat and mark the path from the main road to his home with its blood. That would ensure that the soldiers of Cyre would never attack his farm.   So he did just that. As he painted the path to his home, one of his sons named Ruse walked with him, singing to keep them both entertained as it was a long path. People walking past were murmuring as they saw him work.   After the job was done, Gobby went into town to sell wares at the market. It didn't go very well because the town's people were under the impression that he was doing "evil magic".   When he returned that evening, he found his home ransacked but the farm untouched. Entering his home he was met with the sight of flesh being devoured by demonic creatures. Gobby fled the house and the demons made to chase but it seemed that they could not leave the house.   In his fury and anguish, Gobby went looking for the hag but couldn't find her. When he tried to reach out to the town folk, they investigated the home. They found his wife and children, but no demons. They also stated they had never encountered a hag in these parts. So, it must have been him.   He did find out, though, that the body of Ruse was not amongst them. Perhaps...   ... but his mind had already started to fail him. The people around him explained that he had already started to forget things long before this incident...and that Ruse had been dead for a long time.   Gobby does not believe that.   As he had strong alibis to his whereabout on the day of their death he was never charged.   And, ironically, as other farmland was taken over by enemy soldiers, his remained untouched and flourished even when he did not work on it.   But he was already a broken man. He usually forgot but when the wind whistled a specific tune, he remembered Ruse. So he decided to go look for him. Because he's out there. Somewhere.
