SIGNAL Campaign Setting

They awoke to a hum, a vibration that enticed their basest instincts enough to rouse them from their hibernation. The hiveship came alive with agitation, what anomaly would so rouse the hosts to awaken from hibernation without command. But then they too, sensed that hum and traced it to a nearby star system, to a world there and the apioids fired up the fusion engine and they set course for the unknown world…”

On 03.03.2169 CE, at 05:19:27h, the Faulkner Satellite Survey Array, in orbit around Mars’ second moon, Phoebos, began detecting a faint anomalous signal with structure which was reported immediately to SOLCOM, the Solar System Space Agency and USCRMC Solar Command. The entire United Solar Cosmocratic Republic came to a standstill as citizens across the lunar space stations of the system and all of the Earth listened to the Solar Broadcasting Corporation live feed of the signal, a haunting alien melody that is unmistakable.
For seven days the signal continued to grow in intensity until as abruptly as it came, it was simply gone; 240 days later it returned, stronger this time. A panel of musical composers came forward to point out the syncopation, rhythm and melody of the signal denoted musical composition which denotes intelligence. The signal was triangulated to the 12-Ophiuchi star system in the constellation Ophiuchus and to one of five world discovered to circle there, previously overlooked, 12-Ophiuchi-b. The first Marathon Mission was a drone mission that confirmed a habitable world a century later, before comms were lost during its descent to the surface of this alien world; Undaunted, in 2298, the Helios embarked to 12-Ophiuchi-b and a century later, it has arrived on the exoplanet, to seek out the source of the signal and study this new world…”

First ‘they’ came, the Chitin, their hiveship trailing smoke to land somewhere far in the south of the world near the South Ice. From their Hiveship, the Chitin crawled to wage a crusade against the Hyrdomala’an homeworld of Oa across the southern world, slaving their kin and sundering their works to build great hives on them. The Hyrdromrala’a of the south flee north to the only place the Chitin cannot pass and cannot go - The mycological Bracchion of their ancestral heartland, spore choked mold plains, ooze marches and fungal jungles sprawled across the equator of the world. First they tried to burn their way into their ancient lands, but the spores drove them back. Now they seek to breach the north beyond the Bracchion through the vast petrified mycelium tunnels beneath, a realm considered sacred to all Hyrdromala’a, ‘Kruxphlaegn’, the Halls of the Elders.
But then still others came, their gleaming metallic vessels also marooned by impacts from territorial Psilocae in the circumpolar orbital ice rings, to be marooned as the Chitin had been. First, those survivors of the Marathon Mission, who came to fight with the Hyrdromala’a against the Chitin scourge. Having landed south of the Bracchion, some of these were captured by the Chitin and some died among the Chitin, war heroes. Now more Humans come, with a bigger vessel and they look to be here to stay and still in search of, the ‘SIGNAL’…
