The Compass

Although both the Airelsat and Sanyadarishya have a strong navel tradition, largely that tradition was built up first sailing around their own lands, and then over the ocean between the two. Navel exploration was not done often because no one wanted or cared to sponser explorers since although they both had found eachother, any lost sailers who made it back rarely if ever brought back stories of other species to trade with, or lands to settle. When they did, they were not often taken seriously. With the compass's invention the skill required to navigate the world was reduced, and accuracy increased, all that was left was a desire to explore, and the funding to do it. One famous example was Coneach 'The Black Mist' Gall of Gravellow Atoll who set up a pirate empire, and the later explorer ________ who found the The Serene Key and helped set up the trade based Republic of Sporaria, by farming rare spices found there.

Utility

The significance of the compass is that because a ship's crew could already magically make winds to propel themselves the largest barrier to navel expansion and exploration was navigation, and interest in doing such. The compass lifted the biggest barrier to navel exploration, although not much was done, it also saved time for merchants navigating.
Access & Availability
While still fairly expensive, most if not all merchants have one by present day.
Discovery
Around 1200, the first compasses started to be made and miniaturized for ship navigation. Some speculate that Coneach 'The Black Mist' Gall of Gravellow Atoll had a secretly invented compass, or indipendently invented one which is how we was so easily able to return to his hideout at the Gravellow Atoll before it's wide spread invention and use. Around 1250, compasses started to be produced in Sanyadarishya lands, and by 1300, it had spread to Airelsat lands via trade. It became common place by 1350.
