Spotted Falcon
Basic Information
Biological Traits
The spotted falcon shows sexual dimorphism with females being much larger than males and having fewer colors than males.
Genetics and Reproduction
Spotted falcons reproduce though eggs. The mother will lay a clutch of 2-7 eggs and will protect them, never leaving the nest until they all hatch. The eggs take about 37-40 days to hatch, and 20-30 days after, the mother will begin to hunt for the young as well.
Growth Rate & Stages
Spotted falcon chicks are covered in thick brown down feathers, and hatch with their eyes open. Over the course of 4 years, they will molt multiple times until they are fully grown.
Ecology and Habitats
They make their nests at high elevations, on mountain tops, tree canopies, or on top of tall buildings. They thrive in cooler environments with minimal precipitation. They are usually found in mating pairs, mating for life.
Dietary Needs and Habits
The spotted falcon will usually eat meat, hunting on the wing for most other smaller birds like duck, goose, and sometimes even other falcons. They dive at their prey from above and grab their preys' wings in its talons and usually tear through them, before they wil catch the now falling prey and take it to their nest.
Biological Cycle
They will usually store up food for the winter, but do not hibernate or migrate. They will molt their feathers in exchange for warmer ones in the autum, and will lose thier winter feathers for cooler ones in the spring.
Behaviour
They are mostly solitary birds, however they will occatonally travel in pairs. The males will do courtship dances and flying for females, and will do most of the hunting. They mate for life.
