Sutter Graves was intended to be the sixth and final child sacrificed in 2011's failed Tyme Circle sacrifice. Because her parents failed at their task of killing her (in part because Sutter bit her father hard enough to rip off one of his fingers when he pushed her onto the killing slab to start taking her apart), the ceremony went wrong, and Sutter is directly responsible for the deaths of that dreadful, dreadful miasmic week-month-year.

She dated Oyibo Mehta in high school before dropping out. Their breakup was ferocious, and was entirely caused by Sutter refusing to hide herself in the closet and Oyibo not being comfortable with being out. Juvenile, yeah, but Sutter had already been battered for her sexuality at that point, and Oyibo wouldn't even hold her hand in the hallway.
After breaking up with Oyibo, Sutter got into a relationship with Joanie Bluefoot, which ended with Joanie's abuse and ill treatment. Sutter, after nearly dying at the hands of her girlfriend, woke up in the hospital with nothing but wretched

Honestly, Sutter Graves doesn't give a damn about her gender.
If she thought about it, she'd realize she's somewhere on the nonbinary spectrum, but ... well, she hasn't, and she's probably not going to.

Sexuality

Sutter is homosexual & homoromantic-- she's only interested in sex and romance with women (or nonbinary folks, but Sutter considers that under the sphere of gay, because in her words "well, they ain't a man, so."). As a result of being gay bashed at a point in her past, Sutter is rather aggressive about her sexuality as well. She can go from being amicable and calm to snarling, bristling, and ready to fight almost immediately as soon as someone makes a barbed jab about her sexual orientation.

Employed at Tom & Tina's dive, a local place that serves good drinks only because she works there.

Mental Trauma

Sutter Graves has intense post-traumatic stress disorder. She sees things beyond the veil as a result of the 2011 failed Tyme Circle sacrifice; having been the intended final sacrifice as a child, Sutter is irreversably tied to the world beyond. Sutter's missing eye still interprets flashes of extra-normal imagery. Glimpses of entities Sutton knows to be real blaze themselves against the inside of that missing eye and Sutter is helpless against it.
Additionally, Sutter has paranoia as a result of what happened to her. This developed as a trauma response; her parents were part of the sacrificial attempt, after all.
