Scale Rot
It's a highly lethal disease that infects multi-celled living organisms. It first causes a bad fever and delirium; some may start vomiting. This is the beginning stage where the disease is incubating and spreading. Then terrible aches start. These pains indicate that the afflicted has hit the second stage. This is where the being's tissue or flesh begins to become necrotic. It then rapidly spreads. They, quite simply, rot from the inside out.
Called "Scale Rot" because it first appeared in the Sky Sovereigns of the Land of Aginrese. The disease would cause their insides to decay until only the skeleton was left. It quickly spread through the population, almost annihilating them. Unfortunately, it was contagious not just to the Sky Sovereigns but other species of creatures as well.
Dragonsingers caught it from their partners, who brought it back to their villages. Several villages were eradicated. At this time the Sky Sovereigns knew that to protect their people they must leave. Those infected, Sovereigns and Dragonsingers both, left to die together in a barren stretch of land. It is said that the disease from their corpses created Zargyth Swamp. That their bones rest at the bottom, forming the foundation of the swamp.
Over the centuries, it has disappeared and returned many times. In contemporary times, it has not emerged for decades. While it primarily occurs in the Land of Aginrese, throughout history an unlucky few have carried it to other countries. This lead to hysteria, temporary closing of ports, quarantine, whilst the officials tried to figure the sickness out. With time treatments have been developed and stricter screening measures put in place, especially regarding the Land of Aginrese.
Due to its contagiousness and lethality, Scale Rot has not been studying extensively. Therefore, not all transmission vectors are known. The ones found so far are: physical contact, blood, and contaminated food and water. 80% of the people who are infected die. Of the 20% who survive, 90% of those are upper class in some way. These survivors are physically weaker, in poorer health, and more susceptible to illness.
