Ep. 305 Dismantle the Establishment and Dragons

General Summary

On the last episode of this! Our daring party completed their first bomb-ass boss battle! After a few days of relaxation and rebuilding, it came to their attention that Quinn has gone missing. Time to return to heroic doings!

Our party heads South to Houndbreach, during which Baelai plays Greensleeves 4,111 times, which is a welcome change after spending time in the vast cities of Keryn and Ringwe'Eska. It is a simple riverside city, with friendly locals and plenty of places to go and have some fun. Automatically the three adventurers are suspicious

"Hi, is Baelai. We are in Houndbreach? Are you there? Otherwise we went to the wrong place with creepy guards. Tell us please, love Billy"
"Not in Houndbreach. Not sure where I am. It's dark and creepy and evil. I can't do anything"
- Baelai and Quinn through Sending
To gain more information, the party decides to familiarize themselves with the city. They head to the Merchant's Guild in the center of town, and have a collective panic attack about socializing with the bustling group they find inside. It takes them some time, after being assured that they don't need boats or goats to speak to a guild clerk. After Baelai tries to trade his gemstones for magical items and the party asks about any dark creepy locations in Houndbreach, it becomes apparent very quickly that magic is not welcome here, and most of the inhabitants fear it. But more so, they fear the Enforcers coming to arrest them for not following the laws against mages.

After thoroughly causing the guild clerk to panic, they move on to different matters. Like becoming members of the Merchant's Guild. Congrats! And then going to speak with the head of the guild, Conall Driftleaf

Conall had met with Quinn once before she disappeared; she had told him about Ringwe'Eska's plight and convinced him to send supplies and produce to her people. He was eager to help, even if she was recently arrested by the Enforcers.
"Her story was so unimaginable, I almost didn't believe her until she showed me her signet ring" - Conall
Conall expresses his sympathies for all those who are oppressed by the law and advises the party to keep their heads down and not bring up anything to do with magic while in Houndbreach.

Following the next lead, our party goes to the Enforcer HQ to speak with Captain Skerret about Quinn's arrest. According to the captain, Quinn burst fire from her hands with malicious intent and, like with most of their arrested mages, was released and left outside of the city gates when she could not provide evidence to her claim of being mayor to Ringwe'Eska.

The party can tell she's lying, and they are further disturbed as they watch guards drag a tortured elf out of the HQ and through the city gates. Luckily, she is left unharmed so that the party may question her.

The sunelf mage has little information for them, but is able to reveal that she was the only one in the prisons of the Enforcers HQ, believing there to have been a shipment of mages taken somewhere. The party heals her and cleans up her traveling clothes, so she offers to return to Ringwe'Eska and relay a message to Ler and Gale about Quinn's arrest and disappearance.

The party's next move is to talk to the locals, and the best place for that is Fafnir and Mori's bar. Fafnir is clearly more on edge than usual, especially as an Enforcer enters the bar. Under some improvised excuses, the party is able to get Fafnir alone so they can get more information from him. He tells them about the connection of mage disappearances and this town's arrests. He doesn't know where they go, but he knows that whoever is caught by the Enforcers is typically not seen again. Which frightens him, for his family is at great risk.

The player's suspicions lean towards the merchants and the shipyard, so they attempt to sneak their way in. They massively fail in stealth, but make up for it with incredibly improvised deception. They now have the entire Enforcer guard force convinced that they are from some sort of union and are here for surprise scenarios and inspections. The guards, after spilling some opinions about their nasty Lieutenant Rollant and the mage prisons, go off to tell the rest of the guard to leave the party alone.

Finally the party finds what they are looking for, a shipment crate that has evidence of in-habitation. Air holes, bedrolls, and an anti-magic field clues the party in that it is very likely the arrested mages were shipped down the river, and that they are too late.
