Summary
The people of the restless tropics are an isolated people that have a disdain for outsiders. A society made up entirely of gnomes that are heavily attuned with nature as a people. Their nation has no official name. Instead they have five names, one for each of the five Clans. It is ruled by a loose council consisting of the heads of the five Clans, who are named shamans. Usually these shamans are the most wise and most attuned with the nature spirits of their clan.
Citizens
As mentioned, the gnomes have five clans that all citizens fall under. While the clans each have their own unique cultures and personalities, they all share the same base culture. They all show respect to nature and its beasts, as well as having the mentality of nothing going to waste, they also have respect to those who are older as their jungle is hard and arduous to live in. Although they aren’t exactly tribal, they are still a culture in its infancy and have access only to some very basic metals and a basic idea of agriculture that has been heavily improved by their rare interactions with more mature cultures.
The Clans
The Pale Woods Clan: They are a clan who are most accustomed to the nature around them. They have the innate ability to cast nature based illusions and speak with the small beasts of the forest. They are the most adept at stealth and trickery, and are often prone to playing tricks on the other clans. Their shaman embodies chaos within the court, named the Pale Spirit. (Forest gnomes)
The Iron Crown Clan: They are a clan of forgers and tinkerers. Those who use the basic metals and forging skills that the Restless Tropics has access to. They also have developed high knowledge of the alchemical. Interestingly, they are the toughest of the clans, probably due to the frequent accidents caused by their tinkering. Their shaman embodies law within the court, named the Iron Monarch. (Rock gnomes)
The Standing Boulder Clan: They are a clan of miners and are the main providers of the different metals and materials, carefully easing them from the ground without disturbing the nature around them. The clan lives inside caves and mines and are accustomed to the caves. Overtime, this has granted them superior vision in the dark better than any other gnome. They have also learned to expertly camouflage their cavern territories, hiding them from outsiders and even sometimes the other Clans. Their shaman embodies strength within the court, named the Standing Mountain. (Deep gnomes)
The Silent Mage Clan: They are a clan of scholars, scribes, practitioners of magic and gatherers of knowledge. Many of their members are marked with arcane sigils in the form of tribal tattoos. Some say this is done in order to enhance their arcane abilities. They are expert cartographers usually responsible for mapping the shared jungle. Their shaman brings curiosity and thirst for knowledge within the court, named the Arch Mage. (Mark of scribing gnomes)
The Green Lion Clan: They are the clan most entangled within the fey realm. They are truly one with nature, able to shape it to their will and hide within it like no other. They are stranger than the other gnomes as they do not look like the others because of their connection with the fey. They are the main communicators with the Green River and its spirits. Their shaman embodies the fey realm and its denizens within the court, named the Green Lion. (Lotusden halfling)
Culture
While the clans each have their own unique cultures and personalities, they all share the same base culture. They all show respect to nature and its beasts, as well as having the mentality of nothing going to waste, they also have respect to those who are older as their jungle is hard and arduous to live in. They are also a very xenophobic and isolationist people and would most likely meet any outsiders with hostility, if not outright aggression.
Political system
The main rulers of the people are the shamans of each clan that unite in a council called the Seasons court. This Court meets infrequently and usually only comes together in times with issues that involve the clans as a whole. They will argue until they reach a decision among all of the five Shamans. Other than that, each shaman handles their clans business without the involvement of the others.
Settlements
The Green Haven: The main city of the tropics it holds the estates of each clan and almost everything the clans own, split in five between the clans. While all are allowed to travel within the city, even within other clans’ territories, one is given benefits if they are in the clan that holds the territory they are in such as lower prices or priority in order, etc. It also houses the Seasons Court.
Tawnyville: A fairly recently erected coastal village, it is populated mostly by the Silent Mage and Iron Crown clans. There they attempt to create ships to travel to new lands, as all gnomes hold a thirst for knowledge. Being so far from the jungle, most who are not involved in the running of the town or the ship building project would have no reason to be there.
Army
The army is less of an organized army and more of a loose collection of tribal warriors. Made up from different clans with different specialized warriors using their own specific type of warfare that their clan teaches them. When invaders arrive on the island, upon request weapons and armor created by the Iron Crown Clan forged from the best materials the Standing Boulder Clan are provide to drive the invaders back into the sea. Each clan keeps their own force of warriors that also act as policing forces for their individual territories.
Religion
The closest thing to organized religion in the Restless Tropics is their worship of their ancestors and Clan spirits of their clans. Annually the people of the tropics will go to the graves of their ancestors and give offerings and prayers. They do the same for their Clan spirits of their clan but more frequently and with specific rituals individual to each clan. Lastly, they seem to have a relationship with the fey realm and their lords and ladies, although some clans have it more than others.
Notable Events
The unification of the clans: The time where a great one, who’s name is lost to time unified the clans under one flag and introduced the fey influence into the tropics.
The first intruders: The day a group explorers from the Dawn Empire came to the tropics on an exploratory mission. They attempted to make diplomatic inroads with the Clans once they realized the land was inhabited, and were shortly killed for their efforts. What exactly caused this slaughter is unknown as none of the members of the expedition survived to tell the tale and the gnomes aren't talking. Since the day the remains of the expedition were discovered by the Empire, an official travel ban has been in effect and no more expeditions were sent. Unfortunately for the world, now the gnomes know that they are not alone on this Plane. Unknown to the world, now the gnomes know and their natural curiosity will not let them leave it be. What will become of this? Only time will tell.
The erection of Twanyville: The erection of the town of Twanyville and the start of work on naval vehicles.
Allies & Enemies
The Haven Has No Need For Outsiders.
Notes
There are alliances between the Iron Crown and Standing Boulder Clans and between the Green Lion and Pale Woods Clans, while the Silent Mage Clan remains firmly neutral.
There is tense peace between the clans most of the time, though minor skirmishes are known to break out over petty disputes.
Each shaman is chosen through a ritual specific to each clan.
The only chance of getting a diplomatic relation is through the Silent Mage Clan as their curiosity might take over their traditions.
