Dragonborn

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dragonborn look very much like dragons standing erect in humanoid form, though they lack wings or a tail. They are tall and strongly built, often standing close to 6½ feet tall and weighing 300 pounds or more. Their hands and feet are strong, talonlike claws with three fingers and a thumb on each hand. Their small, fine scales come in a wide assortment of colors, ranging from brass to emerald green to polished black. Their coloration coincides with the region they were born in.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Dragonborn don't show expressions on their face in the same way as most "soft skinned" folk do. This makes them appear rather stoic and unfeeling to an unfamiliar eye.

Dragonborn faces come in all shapes and sizes. Some are more slender, with long snouts and swept back horns. Others are far more stocky. A dragonborn's face shape usually reflects their Draconic heritage, but centuries of mixing has muddied the resemblance.

Some dragonborn wishing to integrate into Fairsided societies will file down their horns to appear less intimidating and to allow them to better fit through doorways.

Dragonborn eyes are usually amber, yellow, or green. Rarely do dragonborn have blue or gray eyes, and almost never do dragonborn have dark eyes. White dragonborn nearly always have blue eyes. Dragonborn eyes are not slitted, despite popular perception.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Dragonborn are most common within the middle part of Varia, within the desert and on the Braygorian Isles. They are relatively rare and tend to keep to their homelands.

The color of a dragonborn's scales and their breath type are largely dependent on their region of origin, thanks to the regions that their Draconic ancestors chose to call home.

Most Common Breath Types and Color by Region

Region Scale Colors Breath Types
The Dunes, Varian grasslands (Syvolia) Blue, brass, terracotta, sandstone Lightning
Qashós Copper, blue, brass, white (rarely), silver (very rarely) Lightning, fire, ice (very rarely)
Braygorian Isles Green, bronze, gray, black (rarely) Acid
Varian badlands, volcanic wastes (Ath'syvolia) Red, copper, silver, white (rarely) Fire, ice
Golden dragonborn are incredibly rare and thought to be extinct.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Dragonborn names vary widely. There are so many different ethnicities and groups that listing all the naming traditions would be impossible. They are usually sorted into four basic categories: Syvolian, Ath'syvolian, Braygorian, and Qashan.

Syvolian Names

Syvolia is is the region of savanna and desert between the Varian mountains and the Golden Channel. Many nomadic dragonborn tribes roam Syvolia, and naming traditions often vary from tribe to tribe. Listed below are a few common trends:

Male names: Arjhan, Balasar, Bharash, Donaar, Heskan, Kriv, Shamash, Shedinn, Tarhun, Torinn
Female names: Akra, Biri, Daar, Kava, Korinn, Nala, Raiann, Sora, Surina, Thava

Ath'syvolian Names

Ath'syvolia is a strip of land east of the Dunes but west of the mountains. The tribes that roam this region consider themselves separate from the Syvolian tribes and have different Draconic heritages. Ath'syvolian names may have vaguely similar sounds to Syvolian names, but are still unique enough to warrant their own group.

Male names: Drerrhas, Eamboc, Ghesh, Kamter, Medrash, Mehen, Nadarr, Pandjed, Patrin, Rhogar, Topis
Female names: Agissa, Farideh, Harann, Havilar, Hazita, Jheri, Mishann, Perra, Uadjit

Qashan Names

Qashós is a region south of the Dunes, bordering the Varian mountains. It is claimed by a single clan of dragonborn. Qashan dragonborn have mixed Draconic heritage and may even hail from the Syvolian tribes, but their names are very different from their tribal cousins.

Male names: Aarnis, Apith, Durrakaas, Erakris, Nabor, Ravobor, Suljhan, Sulqrin, Tokris, Zorkul
Female names: Casaadi, Dalasa, Darina, Inara, Korina, Qivyre, Rashirina, Rashizita, Thariel, Yrsaadi

Braygorian Names

The Braygorian Isles are a collection of islands to the west of Syvolia. The dragonborn that live here have no affiliation with the Syvolian tribes and have a vastly different culture, so therefore have very different sounding names.

Male names: Cyto, Fralbo, Iaghim, Roizze, Xerleo, Ymos
Female names: Borvyn, Cazet, Tathy, Tephia, Vota, Ynda

There also exist dragonborn outside of any of these categories that have names in Common and sometimes even Elvish. Elvish dragonborn names usually come from a history of servitude to the Elvish Empire.
