Flora and Fauna of the Wraithlands
There are a variety of flora and fauna that live within The Wraithlands that live nowhere else. However, much of these species have enough physiological similarities to native flora and fauna in areas surrounding The Wraithlands that it can be assumed that the species have common ancestors. It is very difficult to study these creatures as being within The Wraithlands or near anything that lives there as the area causes sickness, madness, and, ultimately, death within a few hours. Currently Gavin Aeuronatics is trying to develop equipment that would allow researchers to study these living things that survive there but has thus far been unsuccessful.
Characteristics of the Native species
The flora and fauna of The Wraithlands is hostile towards traditionally living things that come from outside the area. The fauna commonly react with violence and, in many instances, will eat whatever passed over from the living lands to the dead zone. The flora, unlike flora outside of this area, are known to move and latch onto things from outside The Wraithlands, seemingly either slowly poisoning or digesting whatever gets caught in its grasp. Anything that is eaten that is native to the area becomes violently ill and often dies as a result. Attempts in the past have been made to destroy The Wraithlands. However, the land itself and everything living within it seems resistant to both normal and Unknowable fire and most tools. It is difficult to know all of what might live within the Wraithlands due to it being difficult to handle or go within The Wraithlands. However, a few examples of what we know exist there are listed below.Flora of the Wraithlands
- The Burning Grove: no one is sure if the trees themselves are burning or if the fire is consuming a specific type of tree, but the fire does not seem to consume any other life forms nor does it seem to spread like fires outside of The Wraithlands.
- Wraithia flora: Known as the Dead Flower, it is a brown and dry flower that looks much like dead flowers outside of this area. It grows from the ground, in particular around the edges of The Wraithland themselves, and releases spores on anything that crosses over the border within range. These spores cause poisoning and infection that often kills the lifeform affected.
- Wraithia serpens: Snake Vines move across the grass and up the trees of The Wraithlands, ensnaring anything that it can catch within its grasp. If it catches something from outside it's natural habitat, where it touches begins to burn and corrode the skin or fur, which it seems to absorb the liquids from this process into its leaves. It is near impossible to cut off and is not susceptible to normal or Unknowable fire.
Fauna of The Wraithlands
- Wraithia rattus: Wraithlands rats are large rats with gray fur and red eyes that scurry along the ground and eat any small bugs or other living creatures that cross from outside of The Wraithlands borders. They are much faster than the native rats of the Oleander peninsula. Their bites causes paralysis and they will chitter, causing other rats to come and begin eating the prey with the original rat.
- Wraithland Humanoids: also coliqually known as The Cursed, these are humanoid-like creatures that crawl on all fours in search of prey. They seem to be of low intelligence in comparison to humans, but are still the most dangerous predator in The Wraithlands that we know of. They seem to eat the smaller prey whole by extending their jaw like a snake. However, they still have teeth that can tear chunks out of prey they cannot eat whole.
