Undertongue
The heritage language of the Midnight Elves, Undertongue is descended from Elvish, but also has roots deep in Draconic. When the Seven Days Rebellion ended the reign of Lolth, all Undertongue texts were destroyed, and to rebuild, the Midnight Elves borrowed the Dwarvish Script to assign spoken sounds letter equivalents, as the destruction of Lolth's Temple marked the end of anyone who knew how to write using the Elvish Script.
Writing System
The Undertongue alphabet uses the Dwarfish Script, which consists of twenty-seven characters including seven vowels: a, e, i, o, u, y, and ae.
Geographical Distribution
Undertongue is mostly spoken by the Midnight Elves, though, quite surprisingly, it is a common language for scholars and other intellectuals to learn, as many texts of various topics are written in Undertongue.
Phonology
Undertongue is a mix of light sounds and harsh, guttural tones. A total of one hundred different phonemes, including fifteen "vowel" sounds.
Morphology
Undertongue favors short, direct words with minimal prefixes or suffixes. the prefixes "e", "la", "nu", "ni", "er", "ru", and "ri" are used to denote possession, while the suffixes "ul" and "il" are used to denote future events.
Syntax
In Undertongue, the concept of present progressive and present participle are rolled into one form, verbs come after apostitives, and grammar rules regarding word order similar to those in Spanish or any other Romantic Language exist.
Vocabulary
A grand total of three thousand words are known to exist in Undertongue, with the average speaker knowing two thousand and coming into contact with five hundred on a daily basis.
