Crocela
Crocela are a animal from Ocarro. They are mammals and have both domesticated and wild types with the domestic often being raised as livestock.
Appearance
They have four long legs and a long neck and come up to about elbow height on the average human. Domesticated Crocela produces more wool than wild Crocela. The males are bigger and bulkier and have short nubby horns, the wild Crocela have larger horns, and the females are smaller and chubbier and have small or no horns. They tend to have brown or beige wooly fur possibly with some spotted patterns. They tend to be darker along their back and head and lighter on their stomach and undersides, this helps them deal with the heat of ocarro.Biology
Diet
Crocelas are herbivores and eat lots of plants, however, they tend to eat from shrubbery and trees rather than grass. They have thickened skin on their tongue that helps them eat thorny plants.Behavior
Crocela have a herd mindset often flocking into groups with a dominant leader. They like to stay near their herd and have a strong instinct to follow their other flock members. This allows them to be easily herded as a group into a pasture or pen, especially if they are enticed by food. Crocela females produce milk normally after having a baby and depending on whether the specific animal is a dairy breed may continue to produce milk until the baby is weaned (non-dairy breeds) or past that (dairy breeds). Most of the Crocela raised on ocarro are breeds made for textile or meat production, not dairy.Uses
Crocela are commonly kept as livestock on Ocarro and a few other planets, although ocarro has by far the largest population. They are best raised by free-ranging or by grazing them in pastures. They are raised for their wool, milk, and meat all of which are key components in Ocarran culture. Crocelas produce some milk and are often slaughtered for their meat. Both of these are a staple in traditional Ocarran food. Crocela fur is used in a lot of textiles, and in domesticated breeds needs to be shorn to stop the animal from overheating. Due to modern textiles, the use of Crocella wool in clothing has dropped significantly however the wool is still used in blankets and decorations.
