Faster-than-Light travel, commonly called Subluminal or shortened to FTL, is a way of traveling long distances at speeds faster than light travels, aka it is very fast.
Science
The technology is used to propel a spacecraft forward at speeds that are faster than light. It involves the craft being enclosed in an energy shield that moves the ship at faster-than-light speeds without having it ripped apart. The engine used to achieve this is called a Subluminal Engine.
It requires much navigation and astral cartography to travel at FTL speeds without having the ship run into any stars, planets, or other objects in space.
Use
Faster-than-light travel, and the subluminal engines used to achieve it, have been used for many generations of
Spacecraft, for interstellar travel. Spacecraft of medium size and larger tend to have Subluminal engines and it is quite rare for smaller ships to have one as they are normally only short-range craft.
