Kandu

The Kandu is a large creature native to the planet Epra.

Appearance

The Kandu are large stocky creatures, with broad chests, tall shoulders, and thick stubby tails. They are quite large, often out-weighing a tonne when fully grown. They have two sets of legs with the majority of their weight being held on the front, with flat round feet.   They have protective skin, covered in scaly patches which work like armor. They also have some bristles, mostly along their back and neck. They tend to be dark brown, back, or gray in color, with very few being light in color.   They have round stubby heads with one or two short horns protruding from their nose.

Biology

Diet

The Kandu are herbivores who mostly graze on grass and low-lying shrubbery. They have been known to uproot shrubs and trees and plants they are grazing on. Those that live as livestock or in zoos are often also fed fodder alongside anything that they graze.

Behavior

The Kandu, especially the females, are social animals and often live in herds made up of extended family with the leader often being the oldest female in the group. The leader is only replaced upon death or if she is unable to fulfill her role anymore.   Adult Males do not often live in herds, often going off on their own when they reach adulthood, and only meeting up with herds during mating season. Males, mostly young males, may form bachelor groups however this is uncommon as the males can be very aggressive and territorial, especially around mating season.   The Kandu give birth to live offspring, with the mothers typically not giving birth again for two or three years. It takes four or five years for Kandu to reach maturity, when that happens the females tend to stay with the family herd while the males tend to leave and go off on their own.

Uses

The kandu are often raised as livestock, with them being most common on Epra their native planet as well as on other planets like Ocarro. They are mostly raised for their meat, which is a staple in Tiq’en cuisine.   Other things, like their horns and their pelts, may also be used. Their pelts are a particularly important byproduct as they can be turned into leather and are also very strong.
