Ocarran clothing, worn by the ocarran people, is made to suit the dry climate of the planet and the extreme temperature changes common throughout the day and the year.
This article does not talk about the more modern trends found in cities like
Cantaro where there is more influence from other planets.
Traditional clothing can be worn as everyday wear and is often minimally decorated with embroidery being used along the hems to reinforce them. More formal traditional clothing is heavily decorated with embroidery and other embellishments.
The fabrics and materials used for the clothing vary depending on the quality and use of the clothing with formal clothing being made out of finer more expensive fabric and everyday wear being made out of simpler less refined materials. Crocelas often provide most of the materials used for
Traditional textile production .
Clothing
Base layer
The base layer of traditional ocarran outfits is a set of trousers and a long loose-fitting tunic with tight sleeves. These layers are worn every day, and on hot days are often the only layers being worn.
Outer layer
Extra layers for warmth are also worn during the colder days, with outerwear like vests and jackets -both long and short- being common. They most commonly open in the front, but some wrap around and close to the side. They are often kept closed through the use of a belt, brooches and clasps may also be used.
These outer layers may have fur or wool lining to add warmth.
Shoes
Traditional shoes are often boots, but flats may also be worn especially in more urban areas or by more upper-class families.
The shoes worn as part of formal traditional dress are often heavily decorated, often with embroidery and other embellishments.
Headgear
Headscarves
Married women tend to wear small head scarves covering their heads. Large Shaw-like veils are sometimes worn, but due to their impracticality when it comes to everyday work they tend to only be worn as formal wear or by those who have the time to wear impractical clothing. Smaller headscarves and head coverings are commonly worn for everyday wear.
Unmarried women and girls don’t traditionally wear a headscarf, but they may wear one as part of their formal wear especially if they are a bit older and past the young child phase.
Caps
Round brimless caps are commonly worn to keep the head warm during winter and protected from the sun during the summer. They are worn by people of all genders, especially men and unmarried women -basically anyone who doesn't wear a headscarf.
These caps may have fur or wool lining to add warmth in the winter.
Hairstyles
Men and boys tend to keep their hair short or shaved, often having well-kept beards. Women and girls will often keep their hair in braids, with four or five braids being the most common traditional hairstyle. Women may tie the braids back to keep them out of the way.
Tattoos
Tattoos are common in traditional ocarran communities, especially among the older generations; the younger generations will often use temporary dyes and copy the traditional tattoo patterns. They were used to delineate whether people are married or have come of age, along with being seen as beautiful.
Women will commonly have facial tattoos, often on the forehead, but arm and hand tattoos are also common. Men will often have tattoos along their arms and shoulders.
The tattoos themselves often involved crescent and dot designs.
Makeup
Makeup, specifically face paint, is often worn to traditional formal events. Most makeup is worn by women, but men may wear certain styles. The most obvious form of makeup is the colorful bridal makeup worn by brides on their wedding day.
Jewelry
Metal jewelry is often used as a part of traditional ocarran clothing. Most common for everyday wear are brooches and fibulas which are used to clip clothing closed and earrings are also common, especially for women. necklaces, bangles, and anklets are often used for formal wear.
Protective symbols like the Kimun are commonly worn as protective amulets as well as for decoration.
Jewelry is often
made out of silver or silver-looking metals, with precious stones or enamel for extra decoration. Everyday jewelry tends to be simpler in design, formal jewelry tends to go all out.
