Thunese Coming of Age & Youth Day

Thunus Youth Day is a Thunese holiday that celebrates the youth and the future of the next generation. It places emphasis, especially on the youth who are going through important life milestones during the year like their first birthday, first year of school, middle school graduation, etc.
It has ties with Thunese Coming of Age ceremonies and is believed by scholars to have evolved from those traditions. Many people have their coming-of-age ceremony on this holiday rather than on a separate date.
Traditional clothing and makeup are worn on this day but are not a requirement as long as the person is dressed formally. Gift-giving is common on this day, mainly from elders to the youths, especially if the youth had come of age that year.

Coming of Age Ceremony

The Thunese Coming of Age ceremony is a celebration of a child coming of age and reaching adulthood. The coming of age tends to take place between the ages of ten and the mid-teens. Nowadays the ceremony happens around the age where children would be going into secondary school, so mostly teens.
As stated earlier, the celebrations are commonly held on Thunese Youth Day, and if a family has multiple kids coming of age they will do a joint ceremony, but this is not a definite rule, and a different date, like the child’s birthday or a different significant event, may be chosen. It is considered a great offense if one who was invited to one of these events skips without warning and may be a cause for difficulties in relationships.
Traditional clothing is worn during the ceremony and the person coming of age normally receives their first set of traditional adult Thunese clothing, normally given as a gift, Before this they are considered a child and would dress as such.
After this ceremony, the youth is allowed to wear adult traditional clothing as mentioned earlier as well as the traditional tattoos and may decide to get them tattooed on this day, as it was done historically. The markings are typically picked by the person doing the tattoos, they are normally someone who knows the child quite well and will choose markings with a suitable meaning for their life, family, and ambitions.
