Collapse of the Gates

As the war between the Colonial Earth Empire and The Union of Socialist Systems culminates in the first deployment of the Inter-System Ballistic Missile is deployed. Both systems had developed the dangerous nuclear arms, capable of glassing a planet though the Gates.
However, what could not be explained is why when the missile reached the gate did the gate completely shut down. What had never thought to occur did, and multiple gates across the expanse of humanity began to shut down at random.

This would lead to the Age of Silence.
