Close to the heartland of the Rostordian Kingdom, the Eltane Rivers supports much of the populace with fish, game and fertile ground. The warm mountain waters also provide relief from the everpresent cold, something which even the local animals take advantage of.
However, the well-being of the rivers have always been delicate. More than once, warfare or other problems have threatened to render it desolate. The caretaking of the river is enshrined in the very founding laws of the Rostordian Kingdom and neglect of its well-being is grounds for the current ruler to be deposed by the
Rostordian Royal Guard.
Local druidic orders, a mix of the human settlers and the native elves, tend to the river and keep an eye out for potential issues, while keeping the locals informed of its well-being.
The area is mostly small hills, almost always covered in a layer of snow. Between snakes a countless number of rivers, who split and join over and over again. By the banks, cold-resistant plants grows en mass. The rivers terminate at the seas and begins up in the nearby mountains.
The large amounts of plant growth attracts a number of herbivores, who in turn attract carnivores. The river is also home to a number of fish and shellfish, making it a popular area for fishing.
The water originate in mountainous area rich in geothermal activity and even a fair bit downstream, carries a pleasently warm temperature.
Fish and gamemeat, as well as water. The fertile ground also allows many farms to perate nearby. However, there's only so many ressources to go around, so locals are very careful about not exploiting the area to the point of damaging it. Local druids are often consulted about the condition of the rivers and the surrounding land.
When the first settlers arrived in the area, who would eventually form the Kingdom of Rostordia, the Eltane river was the first place to be settled. The warm waters provided some relief from the cold and there was enough fish and game to sustain them through the first many years, Eventually, growing numbers forced the settlers to set out out and colonize more areas, lest they deplete the river of all life, but it is widely considered the cradle of the Rostordian nation.
Visitors and traders in Rostordia often visit the area, both for hunting, fishing and bathing.
Ha ha Love the idea of a bunch of druids looking after what sounds like a the water source for a hot springs town! Joking aside, this'd be a great setting for a DnD one-shot! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Feel free to check out my Rivers/Waterways entry: Loch Mesner
