Heart Surgery
Heart surgery is a brand of invasive surgery meant to alleviate or cure matters of the heart. It is considered an extreme form of surgery, only to be performed in emergencies. As it is a new field of medical techniques, there are also still a lot of unknowns regarding its use and risks. Doctors trained in it are also still hard to come by, though their numbers are growing.
Utility
Heart surgery provides a non-magical alternative to deal with issues with the heart, which can be vital should there not be a skilled healer available.
Access & Availability
Heart surgery is still quite uncommon. The knowledge of it is spreading and Doctor Rose Blumenkrantz is working hard to spread her knowledge as far as possible, while also gathering new knowledge. As such, the techniques
Complexity
It is quite complex. The heart is a vital organ and missteps can easily cause fatal damage. Not to mention just getting to it takes work, due to in being incased in protective bones. Anesthetics are required for most lifeforms to not make the experience torturous, which also makes the work easier on the surgeon. Alchemical tinctures or medicinal fluids that can counter most infections are recommended to avoid infections.
Discovery
While magic, whatever form it takes, has always been of great use, many have searched for ways to do what magic can do, but without magic. It is not necessarily an attempt at making magic superfluous, but more often an acknowledgement that a skilled magician of the right type may not always be on hand. Such is the case with the field of medical science, where many has investigated methods of healing using mundane methods.
Doctor Rose Blumenkrantz of Megatropolis was one such doctor, specialising in the study and treatment of internal organs. She heavily argued for the value of surgery, due to damage to organs having a high risk of turning fatal quickly without treatment, meaning waiting for a healer to be available was not always feasible. This was especially the case with hearts, an organ many species relied upon to live. However, for that very same reason, surgery of the heart was considered incredibly risky, perhaps to risky.
Doctor Rose would get her chance to put her theories into practice when a patient was brought into the hospital she worked at in early 2993 BIT, when the victim of a mugging gone wrong was brought in with a bullet wound that had hit the heart. With no healer available and the victim close to dying, Rose made the decision to operate.
After a grueling two and a half hour, Rose declared the surgery done. The patient would contract an infection from the surgery two days later, but by then they had been assigned a healer to help them recover, who easily cured the disease.
Doctor Rose was heralded as a heroine for her actions and her accomplishments has spurred increased interest in surgery and its possibilities.
