Emnae Corval

Baroness Alemnaece Corval (a.k.a. Emnae)

Emnae Corval was the wife of Dennis Corval, the Baron of Ibney. She was the first woman to stand as a Etat de Maison in the Chambre d’Autorité.   Emnae had established a good reputation in the courts of Deradans before the death of her husband. When the Baron died she refused to give up the barony, instead choosing to rule as Baroness Corval of Ibney in his memory.   The new position of authority was contested vigorously by the conservative men of the realm. Their fear of women overtaking power was paramount, although they had not been so keen to reject her at the balls and dances of the realm.   Baroness Corval’s subjects in Ibney already knew of her skill as a dignitary, during her husband’s demise she had taken a progressively greater interest in matters of state that affected her people. The Ibnians were more than willing to strike off as an independent state in support of Baroness Corval.   The threat of losing the prosperous snapbrandy regions was enough to force the other dignitaries to submit to her position.   In 1533 Corval secured sponsorship for the position of Etat de Maison in the Chambre d’Autorité. She lost the vote in a landslide defeat to Count Ghoût of Mentiet. But Emnae did not lose faith.   Emnae succeeded in forcing another vote within the first year of Count Ghoût's appointment. Ghoût's inability only heightened people's interests in making Emnae Coraval the Etat de Maison. She won the vote in 1534 and became not only the first female Etat de Maison, but the first female to enter politics in the Chambre d’Autorité.   Influencing the wills of the state for fifty-two years, Baroness Emnae Corval of Ibney died of a heart attack on the benches of the Chambre d’Autorité. Most likely caused by the partying and revelry she enjoyed throughout her life, her ninety-first birthday was said to be the biggest celebration in Deradans history; her funeral the biggest wake.
