Professor Sidqi

Professor Sidqi el-Selim (a.k.a. The Tariqan of the Tescaries)

"If we tolerate the Condominium's crimes simply because they are not under our noses then we are complicit. Evil is not unmade by putting it on a ship. Divine law does not know man's borders."
Sidqi el-Selim is a notorious pirate in the Eastern Archipelago of the Tescaries, preying on Condominium and Red Sails ships, particularly those trafficking slaves and the proceeds of that slavery. Commanding a crew of equally radical Disciples of Tariq, Sidqi's fanaticism combined with his deep understanding of how the Condominium operates makes him one of the most dangerous pirates in the Eastern Archipelago. It is claimed that he and his crew are the only Runberi allowed in Heras Tut, and likewise the only Runberi who know how to get there. Merciful compared to many other pirate crews in the Eastern Archipelago, Sidqi has been known to let his victims go with merely the exhortation to turn away from injustice and towards Nuwa. Nevertheless, he has raided and sunk many ships.   Despite his activities, the Tariqan School in Zurawah has never formally rescinded Sidqi's position as professor.

Personal history

"There is nothing more dangerous than a righteous man."
Born to a family of Zurawahi caboters, Sidqi's family was always an aspirational one. His father dreamed of growing the family wealth until one day they could call themselves a great house and enter the Assembly of Zurawah. And though the el-Selim family would never rise to the councilors, the family's wealth did grow, and the children of the family were sent to receive an education.   Sidqi was never his father's favorite, for he didn't have much mind for mercantile matters and took evening prayers all too seriously. Nevertheless an intelligent child, Sidqi was sent to the Tariqan school in Zurawah, either to make him a lawman or simply bore the faith out of him.   A lawman he became, and an exemplary Tariqan. He rose the rank of jurist at the exceptionally young age of 22, and become known both for his strict devotion to the Goddess and his sharp legal mind. A true believer in the teachings of Tariq al-Lodi. He held court in Zurawah, and was known especially for his belief that Tariqan teachings could be applied to any area of life and to any people.   He became interested in the Condominium, believing that deep cooperation with the clans would enable the Runberi to not only spread the true faith but also a righteous legal and social order. In 473, he moved to A'az, working for the Condominium as a legal advisor. Though he knew of the Condominium's darker side, he believed that he could help guide the organization from the inside.   Four years later, the Condominium started and won the Pits' War, and though Sidqi would not learn of all that had happened for years, he was appalled. He stayed for a few more years, but saw that the Condominium would not be reformed. In 480, he returned to Zurawah and to the bench, but he spent much of his time railing against the Condominium and its abuses in the Tescaries.    In 482, Sidqi was raised to the professors of the Tariqan school in Zurawah, and he began teaching. He continued to lobby the assembly to enforce Runberi law on the operations of Runberi corporations in foreign lands, but had little success. Eventually, he started planning to put matters into his own hands.   Joined by his devoted disciples and sailing off on a ship donated by a sympathetic merchant, Sidqi set out to end slavery in the Tescaries. Since then, he has turned pirate, targeting the sulfur mines and slave ships in particular. He has been active in the Tescaries for almost 30 years now, and experience has only made him more dangerous and well connected to the Eterti in particular, a group whose ethos he does not necessarily share but finds common cause with.
