Jötun/Trauldan
The Jötun (Yoh-tun) are physically the largest of all the human races, and for this reason they are often referred to by other races as "giants." Jötun have a unique resistance to temperature extremes, reducing all temperature damage (hot or cold) by 1 point per die. They can live and work comfortably under freezing conditions, as well as in stifling heat. Jötun can sleep bare-skinned on ice as easily as they can hold a heated cooking pot in their bare hands. They also have a natural resistance to poisons and intoxicants; they are allowed roll at advantage against the effects of all such substances. Any poison or toxic substance that does inflict damage is reduced to a base d3 roll per round, instead of d4. The Jötun have pale white skin with a flushed pink tint. Their hair color ranges in the shades of blonde, and their eye color can be blue to green to hazel. Men often wear their hair long, with full beards. Women also have long hair which is usually braided.
Given the harsh and frigid environment in which they live, Jötun culture is very pragmatic and functional. The survival of the fittest and strongest leaves little provision for the old and weak. Tribal chieftains are respected and feared, having ascended to power through mortal combat. Certain totem animals are often associated with various Jötun tribes, which incorporate tribal taboos regarding the honor of that animal. The Jötun prefer to live in hilly or mountainous regions, often building permanent houses of stone. Though they are only found in great numbers in the north, smaller communities may exist in various mountain ranges to the south. The common Jötun practice of exiling criminals often leads individuals to seek refuge in southern lands.
OGRIM CULTURE: The most common Jötun sub-group, dwelling across the northern regions, are the Ogrim (s. Ogre). Their tribes produce fierce warriors who rarely back down from battle, even when outnumbered. Their berserker warrior-cults live for the glory of battle and bloodshed. Though it is a great cause of fear in their enemies, this unrelenting ferocity also makes Ogrim armies difficult to assemble and command. Ironically, their wild warlike lifestyle tends to limit their ability maintain kingdoms or rule territories with much order. As collective groups, they are usually limited to small war-bands and family clans. The Jötun do not use wheeled transportation, but rely on sleighs or “sledges” to cross snowy terrain. Some tribes of Jötun, native to lands near the sea, are known to send out raiding war parties in many-oared longships, allowing them a swift means of attack against unsuspecting coastal villages.
