Oni - Nephilim
In eastern folklore as the Oni (aka. the Nephilim) are giants of supernatural origin, the progeny of the ancient Janniri and the original hominid species of ancient Tai'Shea. In the days prior to the Cataclysm, some Janniri had ventured west from Arkhea, travelling from island to island until they reached the continent of Tai'Shea, where there dwelt a semi-intelligent species of humanoid. The primitive hominids (similar to modern-day graggoths and yetis), lived in small tribal communities throughout the continent.
In comparison to other creatures the Janniri had enountered outside of Arkhea, these hominids appeared to have some intelligence and self-awareness, not unlike the Janniri themselves. Though lacking wings and tails, they shared a similar bipedal body form, but with greater physical size and strength. In their lust, some Janniri began to interbreed with these hominids. At first, the offspring of such unions rarely survived for long, being twisted and disfigured by incompatible DNA. However, by altering their physical forms through their natural ethereomorphism, eventually the janniri were able to produce living offspring through their hominid mates. These were the first Oni, giant humanoid creatures over twice the size of human beings, posessing an amazing regenerative capacity and weilding some of the natural ethereal power and abilities of their janniri parents.
In the years just prior to the cataclysm, the Oni not only fought amongst themselves, they invaded the lands of eastern Vensia, including the lands of of Gephta, Tuerga, and Mindar. At this time, these lands were inhabited by the nascent civilizations of the ancient Mena. The Oni forces, along with their armies of lesser hominds and with the support of aerial Janniri, threatened to overrun the coastal lands of eastern Vensia and destroy these civilizations entirely.
Traullish Plague: At the time of the Great Cataclysm, with fragments of the fallen star impacting other places across the planet, the ethereal radiation of these star-stones amplified the regenerative traits of many beings who had partial Janniri blood. This radiation accelerated and distorted their physical growth. Instead of keeping them healthy, fair and youthful, their regenerative powers scarred and twisted their forms, and made them much more aggressive and mentally unstable. This came to be known as the Traullish plague.
The term “traullish” or “troll-like” refers to any humanoids of great size and strength who bear the characteristics of the Oni, including: horns, tusks, and clawed finger, along with remarkable regerative abilities. These vicious and barbaric "Traulls" spread in violence both north and south. Interbreeding with other humanoid species, the descendants of these creatures include the Tuergan found in the secluded jungles of the south and the Ogrim in the desolate reaches of the north.
Maridan: (MAR-i-DAN) pl. Maridani. Centuries later, in the Age of Epiphany, Estari sorcerers created the Maridani to serve as an army of sentient soldiers. The Estari used ethereal manipulation to create a hybrid race of Mena and Traull. These strong and physically powerful beings, did not have the power to use active etherea, but they did possess heat-vision and the benefit of rapid physical regeneration. They became the military might of the Estari at the time of the Conflagration.
