The Doomed Ascent

The Story of the Doomed Ascent, as it is written in the Tumarc:   The Erdhe and Ména prospered in the land, according to the word of God, watching as the spirits ascended and descended upon the heavenly falls. When one day, the wisest of God’s created spirits, asked why Erdhe and Ména did not also ascend to heaven with them.   “Has God indeed said that you shall in no way ascend above the land of clay?” said the Nakhaseraph. “God allows us to climb hills and trees, in all of his Estate,” the children said, “but we may not climb the mountain of the Lord, nor shall we touch the light of his power and glory, or we shall die.”   “You shall not die,” the said the Nakhaseraph. “For God knows that if you ascend to the height of heaven, and see all things from his vantage, you will know all his secrets. You will be like God.”   Seeing that the heights of God towered over all other mountains of the land, and that this vantage would allow them to see and know all things, Erdhe and Ména dared to set their foot on the mountain of God. Step by step, they climbed upward toward the base of the falling light. At the pinnacle of the mountain, they reached out their hands and embraced the light. On that day their lives were taken from them, just as God had said.   But on the third day, God breathed his merciful Spirit into the two lifeless beings, and raised them back to life. When they stood and looked around them, they knew that they were at the top of a mountain, but not one shining with the light of God. They had been removed to the farthest end of Aerith.   Fearful of such a height and of the cloudy darkness above, they went down to the valley below, afraid of what had happened. But the land they found there was not like the estate in which they had previously lived, but rather, it was a rough and dry land. In this barren wilderness of thorns and stones and dust, they settled under the shadow of clouds in heaven.   As Erdhe and Ména gave birth to more children, they began to spread throughout the lands, toiling under the sun, until they returned to the ground.
