MoM Session 4: Shipping Up to Boston Pt. II
General Summary
May 13 - 14, 1994; Friday/Saturday
The town hall meeting continued, with the Wampanoag representative - Robe Andrews-Maltais - taking the podium. He argued for the city of Cambridge to adopt measures similar to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Acts (NAGPRA) present in other states. His emotional appeal to the community fell on deaf ears, likely due to a mysterious magical effect Slush and Medea detected that lulled the Sleepers in the audience into an inattentive stupor. However, the speech was enough to solidify the cabalmates’ resolve to help Robe gain closure surrounding his ancestor’s remains found at the construction site. During the course of the speech, Slush noticed that the local news affiliate was transmitting footage to an external source, despite the coverage not being a live feed. In particular, the surprisingly attentive cameraman focused his lens on the Awakened and supernaturally sensitive members of the audience. As Robe’s speech came to an end, the two connected Mages in the audience suddenly stood up, leaving the town hall with great haste in reaction to some external stimulus. Slush followed after them, only barely managing to miss catching the license plate of their getaway Toyota. Meanwhile, Medea was approached by Kevin Facon on her way to support her cabalmate outside, who offered the opportunity for them to talk.
Medea and Slush listened to “Kevin” talk about how the “spear” found at the construction site was a dangerous supernatural item, and that he represented a government alphabet agency who would ensure the item would be kept safe. Realizing that giving up the artifact would be against the nature of their mission, Medea stalled for time before hitting “Kevin” with a debilitating series of curses - blindness, deafness, and muscle weakness. As “Kevin” was neutralized by Medea embracing her Vice, an awestruck Robe volunteered to help Slush and Medea reach the site with his own personal vehicle. As an afterthought, Medea called an ambulance to care for/remove Kevin Facon from the equation. As they sped to the dig site, both Mages noticed the news van following closely behind. With another quick curse, the van was unable to keep up with the vehicle headed to the Shady Hills Construction site.
Meanwhile, both Rembrandt and Morgan found themselves at the construction site in question. With a rapid assessment, both noticed a small guard booth outside the gate - a still smoldering cigarette in the ashtray - and some rudimentary security cameras. Rembrandt was able to find a path through the blindspots of the cameras, but Morgan elected to have the cameras break by rotating beyond their mechanical range. Rembrandt investigated the guardpost with a Space spell, shocked to discover the security guard collapsed on the ground, experiencing some kind of locked-in syndrome. She determined that this was magical and caused by someone with an eerie nimbus - the sensation that your body is a mere chrysalis that your true self must emerge from. Unnerved but undeterred, both cabalmates investigated further within the construction site. Through intelligent applications of magic and some lucky guesswork, they were able to find the correct covered dig site that corresponded to their objective in Boston.
Upon pulling aside the tent flap and entering, both mages were battered by a strange sensation, as if everything around them was alive and whispering in glossolalic speech. Both mages felt as if they were transported into the Primal Wilds themselves, with Morgan being especially weakened by the presence of the artifact, likely hidden underneath the conspicuous tarp. He realized that this functioned as an Annulity, dampening his access to Stygia. The nature of this magic enraptured Morgan, horrifying him, fascinating him, and compelling him to look underneath the tarp. Despite Rembrandt’s misgivings, Morgan lifted the tarp, uncovering a perfectly preserved golden arrowhead embedded in the ribs of a skeleton. As he held it in his hands and cast a knowing practice of Matter, Morgan was flooded with images of an ancient time, not dissimilar to portrayals of the mythical Atlantis in Awakened society, showing how this arrowhead was forged from perfected gold - orichalcum. As Morgan was lost in his investigation, Rembrandt recoiled in horror as she noticed a familiar nimbus appear outside the tent, that of emergence. Compounding her concerns was the crashing sound of a vehicle barreling through the front gate of the dig site.
As they raced to the dig site, Slush and Medea called Chain Parris, asking him about the two mysterious Mages from the town hall. Chain confirmed the duo as members of the Boston Consilium, Southpaw and Grimm. He also gave them a phrase, mentioning the “Pukwudgie incident” to indicate that the cabal were allies. Finally, he contacted the Head Sentinel Anaconda “The Axe” to provide some backup at the construction site. As Robe, Slush, and Medea entered the site, they witnessed the scene that Rembrandt found herself in the middle of. As she poked her head outside the tent, she saw before her a statuesque man, standing well over six feet in height. His bulging muscles and sculpted body were as if rendered by a classical sculptor of old. Crashing towards the tent was a Toyota, whose occupants were the aforementioned Boston Mages. Everyone was caught in a standoff of sorts, with the muscular man - boasting blue eyes, blonde hair, and white skin - merely requested the arrow, manipulating Morgan’s mind to prompt the Mage to hand it over. As any attempted spells to stop Morgan’s advance were foiled by the counterspells, Rembrandt almost lost hope. The sudden arrival of a second car, carrying the rest of the cabal, turned the tides of battle. Curses and counter-magic were exchanged on both sides as a mad scramble for the arrow commenced. Seeing the odds as overwhelming, the muscular Mage attempted to vanish into the Shadow, but was foiled in turn by Rembrandt’s final exertion of willpower. This left him open to a series of knockout blows from Slush, in a symbolic takedown of the white supremecist ideologies that drove this particular Seer to seek power. As David felled Goliath, the Seer’s body folded in on itself and shrunk, revealing Harvard professor Bradford Gable in the center.
The Boston Mages helped secure the construction site, aided by the appearance of The Axe with some spirit allies as backup. As they took custody of the unconscious Seer, Morgan walked like a man possessed to Robe. He passed the arrow to the Wampanoag man, whose flesh was pricked by the golden arrow. All this was a mystery play for Robe, the progression of events that would lead to his own Awakening as a Mage. Having witnessed a miraculous event, the cabal were content to have the Hierarch of Boston - The Nemean - take watch over Robe and the arrow. A job complete, the cabal enjoyed the sights of Boston for the remainder of their stay, bellies full of lobster rolls. They returned to Milwaukee, hoping to collect on the favors that Tiresias promised them, with an extra passenger in tow - a shovel Morgan had picked up that he swore whispered to him.
