WWDitC Ch. VIII: Student Radio
General Summary
The following is a recording from a casette tape labeled 'Ophelia's Riverside Chats - 1/12/94' in Sharpie. When discovered by our agents it was wrapped in a sheet of paper with a note attached saying 'Jenna: Don't lose this shit, save this for my friends'.
Recording Begins:
Ophelia: And you were just listening to Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)", I hope the lucky lady enjoyed the special dedication. As you all know, this late at night I like to open up the airwaves for call-ins, anything to pass the time and stop me from going crazy. Caller #1, you're on the air.
Caller #1: Cherie here, just wanted to warn everybody about the freaks around campus. One guy started following and screaming at me when I left the library the other night, I'm lucky some other people got in his way. I don't care that the cops called that Misty case closed, I still feel scared going around school this late at night.
Ophelia: It's a dangerous world out there for us girls, just be sure you always have somebody to walk home with you this late at night. Word on the street the school's been getting some generous donations from LA rocker Jason Moore, between the Misty stuff and all this money we should be seeing a lot more security on campus going forward. Sorry to cut you off but we've got another caller coming in, Caller #2 you're on the air.
Caller #2: Andy here, geology major, I actually saw that Jason guy performing on campus earlier tonight! He was pretty alright I guess, it didn't sound anything like the stuff from his albums. Guess you really need the entire band there to copy that sound live, ya know?
Ophelia: We always love when rockers admit that Seattle is the city to be in when it comes to music. Word is that Jason's band is still in flux between here and LA, if they regrouped for a comeback show what song would you want to hear first?
Caller #2: 'Pigeon Pixie Stick' for sure, the stuff that Kate does on that album is sick!
Ophelia: A controversial pick, I definitely want to hear more from you later tonight. But I'm afraid I have to put you hold for a minute, we have an old friend calling back. Jaime, you're on the air again!
Caller #3: Thank you for taking my call once more, what are things like on campus tonight?
Ophelia: Pretty weird, pretty cold, but we've got plenty of music and parties to pass the time. Still not sure if this is your scene?
Caller #3: I am afraid of making new acquaintances near campus. I've been burned before by previous relationships, and though I went to school there I am worried about how I will be received there after so much time has passed.
Ophelia: Sure, people are on edge after everything that happened last fall, but this is still a pretty welcoming place. So long as you don't start screaming at students outside the library you'll find plenty of friends, even the oldtimers will give you the time of day if you're friendly.
Caller #3: That is good to hear. I think I am ready to make the move and leave behind my old neighborhood.
Ophelia: We'd love to have you, let me know where to send the housewarming present! Any song requests after the Riverside Chat is through?
Caller #3: This may be a long shot, but do you have any music by the Eraserheads? They have become quite popular in the Philippines.
Ophelia: I can do some digging, we get albums from all over so the hard part is actually finding them in our pile of records. Stay tuned and I'll try to come up with something, all right?
Caller #3: That is fine. Thank you again, Ophelia, for listening to me tonight.
Ophelia: Friends make the nights pass faster. Folks, I'm having Jenna sift through our bins of records to find some Eraserheads, I've got another fifteen minutes before I'm required by the school to throw on some more music. I'm looking at Jenna right now, she'll propbably need more than fifteen minutes so I'll probably play some of Jason's Sweet Blood Boys for Andy. In the meantime I've got plenty of stories to pass the time, I've heard some wild conspiracy theories from my friends about occult books from Europe and ferry rides from weird fish people. I don't even know where to start with some of the stories, I'll need to take another call to get things all straight. Caller #4, what's on your mind?
Caller #4: Sadie here, you WILL NOT believe what I heard tonight! My friend's boyfriend's father's mistress saw a girl throw a rock through some rich guy's house, it crashed through like half of the house! I don't who did it, but they must have used like a catapult or something to make all that damage, right?!
Ophelia: Fish people can wait, I want to hear all about this drama.
Recording ends.
