A vile collection of weeds and mud that walks like a man, if that man were overweight, smug, and ground puppies into a fine sugar and spread it over his breakfast cereal, ogres are a walking oxymoron: beings made of plants that despise all living things. In their glowing yellow eyes, there is no mercy, only violence and hatred, but never rage. Rage is something that happens to other beings. What ogres feel as they destroy and kill with mathematical precision is...contentment.
Ogres are made of plants, and have a very precise control of the weeds that make up their being. When they get disconnected from the main body, they can either regrow more, or grab some spare plants that are lying around. They often carry large wooden clubs as weapons, and their arms have a very long reach, making them deadly at just about any range. They seem daunting to kill, but they do have a weakness: the mass of plants is actually controlled by a spider-like creature usually located vaguely in the head area. Once that is killed, the ogre is no more. However, ogres are so uncommon and their attacks so few that this weakness is not common knowledge.
Their constant destructive nature often brings them into direct conflict with
Trolls, who regard them as their mortal enemy, and will kill them on sight. Some people, who have a very firm belief in the natural order of things and survival of the fittest, would expect ogres to come out on top more often than not due to most of their attacks being extremely effective against trolls. These people are often invited to explain this to the large collection of ogre heads on several trolls' trophy walls.
Basic Information
Ogres generally maintain a humanoid appearance, with their plants shifting into legs and arms, but they can alter this general form at will.
Ogres mainly differ in what plants they have absorbed, although some have learned to carry non-organic items with them to aid in their sadistic quest.
It is unknown how ogres reproduce, as most expeditions to find them are usually targeted at killing them.
Ogres generally live in swamps, the more plants and mud the better, as they use the swamp's materials to augment and restore themselves before and after a difficult battle. Some Ogres have figured out how to merge with the swamp, growing slowly more powerful along with the plants, and rendering the entire place inhospitable to animal life.
Ogres "eat" by taking animals into their systems, forcing roots into them, and sucking them dry of all nutrients, a process that usually takes 3 days to a month, depending on how large the animal is. Of course, sometimes the ogre deliberately stalls the process...
Additional Information
When ogres meet, they immediately begin fighting each other. If one wins, then the victor absorbs the loser into their system. If it ends in a draw, the two agree to work together. Two ogres working together results in massive damage to nearby settlements, so it's a good thing ogre duels rarely end in a draw.
Ogres live anywhere there is swampland to rejuvenate and strengthen themselves.
Ogres are smart enough to try and exploit weaknesses perceived in armor, and use as many Plant-based attacks against trolls as possible. The problem is, they judge almost every situation based on numbers and strict type advantage, rarely accounting for dodge tactics or unpredictably angry foes.
Ogres see the world as two kinds of things: "dead," and "needs to be dead." They can distinguish between plants, animals and nonliving matter, but have trouble identifying specific creatures.
More information about the ruleset:
Lifespan
Ogres could theoretically live forver, provided they are undisturbed. If they are found by a troll, their predicted lifespan is usually five minutes, if conditions are favorable.
Conservation Status
Ogres are such a violent and unbeneficial species that a petition was started, and subsequently approved, to actively begin cutting down their numbers. This petition, started by the Fairies of all people, was made into the Environmental Protection act of 1210, and the Global Confederation began buying Ogre heads at 400 credits apiece.
Average Weight
130 - 160 lbs.
This Shambling mass has a ton of potential for variant species; Is the Ogre the creature or is the Spider-like creature the actual species? If it's the Spider can they form similar symbiotic creatures in different media, like animal flesh or protoplasm? What about compatible creatures in other biomes? I think if you clarify the relationship between the spider the plant-mass and the ogre it would help me understand this creature.
Thank you for your input, I will think about how to correct this.
