Basilisk Egg Yolks

The egg mass of the Sobek Basilisk has temperary skin hardening properties, and have historically been gathered and eaten as part of rituals before a big hunt or battle.
Upon eating the yolk of the egg, it has an immediate effect of boosting your muscle strength and hardening of the skin, activating the gives a good edge against an otherwise more formidable foe.
The problem with the eggs are gathering them as the basilisk is very secretive and protective about their eggs.
There have been attempts at making coops for them, but they simply don't feel safe enough to lay eggs in capture.
As the shell is toxic to eat, and the actual power presides in the yolk, the best way for warriors and hunters to carry the eggs is pealed and softboiled, in a pouch.

Properties

Material Characteristics

The egg yolk makes a larger part of the egg mass than in our chicken eggs.

Physical & Chemical Properties

The consumption of the egg yolks causes a chemical reaction as soon as the yolk has contact with your body, and starts flowing down your throat
The yolk mixes with your body's natural chemicals and triggers a hormone response that causes temporary muscle growth and hardening of the skin, thickening it, and giving it a more crocodilian leathery apperance.
The passing effect has given rise to the idea that while practical, the effect is actually an allergic reaction of sorts.
As a very rare effect - especially nowadays - due to the dificulty in having a steady supply and the chance and need to consume the eggs on a regular basis, these effects linger longer and may give a permanently tougher leathery skin, making the sobeks skin appear more crocodilian like that of their historic forefathers.

Compounds

While most often eaten raw, it can be used in cooking for a more subtle effect, giving your body a better fighting chance against infections ect.
It is speculated that its properties could do wonders for certain types of medicine as well as an ingredient in combat drugs.

Geology & Geography

The basilisk being native to the Sobek Homeworld makes these eggs hard to find elsewhere.
The eggs are usually kept hidden in dark small places. In nature the Basilisk prefer to nest under large roots or in small naturally occuring holes and the like. In civilized areas, if you are really lucky, they could make a hidden nest in the most inaccessible cornor of your attic or garage.

Life & Expiration

If stored relatively cold, it wont go bad for the first two weeks

History & Usage

History

The basilisk eggs have a long history associated with Sobek traditions and rituals.
Usually you'd have a "scavenger hunt" for basilisk eggs leading up to a big hunt or battle.
The children are told by a young age, that these eggs are important, and that they must bring any home, they can find.
This means children are often found scavenger hunting for basilisk eggs still to this day, and it is a great training in stealth, which gives the race a knack for it later in life.

Discovery

The effect of these eggs have been known for so long, nobody can be accredited with the discovery.

Everyday use

To the Sobek these eggs have a long history of being their "ceremonial combat drug" in times of need.
Nowadays the eggs are still sought after and kept by warbands and space pirates for that very same purpose.
For most others, the eggs are mixed into food especially for the ill and weakened members of your family.

Cultural Significance and Usage

The intake of these eggs for power has been such a large part of the Sobek history, that it comes very natural for them.
In olden days, before a big hunt or battle, when all eggs had been found, there were whole rituals before battle, where the wise elder gave out the eggs to the weakest warriors, so they could form the spearhead of the army. This had two purposes - strengthening the weakest link gave a stronger warband, but it also made the usually weaker members of the tribe be the first in line to the slaughter.

Hazards

The intake of the yolks can cause the condition commonly known as "scute skin".

Distribution

Trade & Market

Don't expect to find actual basilisk eggs on the standard market.
In most cases they are kept and used by the finder, but a few of the ones sold on black markets and in dark alleys might actually be the real deal.

Storage

Keeping them cold, in a fridge or the like, would make them last a bit longer.

Law & Regulation

The Sobek are not big on laws telling them what they can and can't keep or eat.

I made this world because my mind keeps rambling, and instead of stopping it, I'm riding the wave.
It started with a picture in my mind of a tiger man in a small spacecraft following a giant tiger in space, in the tone of old saturday morning cartoons and the Heavy Metal animated movie.
Then came the idea of his occational ally, a woman in space flying a small asteroid. The more I wrote on her, the more I got intrigued by the past, I deviced.
Right now the flow is focused on her background - namely all related to The Genesis Project.
I do all of the writing and almost all of the drawing myself at this point.
My hope for Star Tiger is a published story or a graphical novel, but my big dream is an animated show.
