Dantooine

Dantooine is a large, agricultural world in the Outer Rim, and at one time the heart of the Jedi Order. During the Republic-Sith Wars the world's importance greatly diminished, following the destruction of the Jedi Enclave there and assaults on the nominal capital of Khoonda by pirates and vagabonds. However, a period of exceptional governance, and growing unity among the planet's many farmers, has slowly brought peace and prosperity back to Dantooine, which now thrives again as the Galaxy reconnects.

Geography

Dantooine is a continental world with an exceptionally flat landscape. With the exception of low hills and a scarce few mountain ranges, the majority of the planet sits within 500m of sea level and is dominated by sweeping plains, with gentle slopes carrying water at a slow, steady pace. These wide plains lend themselves to exceptional agricultural productivity, with rainfall passing evenly across the continents, contributing to fertility without excessive flooding. While Dantooine has several, smallish seas, its water is largely trapped in large lakes, maintaining a stable water cycle over its landmasses.   Dantooine's plains are overwhelmingly covered in short grass with soft, loamy soil - making for easy growing of most temperate plants. In a few near-polar areas these plains become bare prairie, though these areas are largely uninhabited and rarely visited; though natural gas produced at the poles is used to meet many of Dantooine's energy needs.

History

Dantooine was founded beyond recorded memory by human settlers from the Galactic Core. Its broad plains and temperate climate made it easy to settle, and an exceptional source of food and luxury biological goods in a part of the Galaxy far from the agriworlds of the Core. Early in its history, Dantooine became home to a Jedi Enclave, largely because of the presence of kyber crystals below the world's surface, but also because of its peaceful agrarian culture.   Unusually for the sector, corporate attempts to take over Dantooine were never successful - likely in significant part because of the Jedi presence on the world - and it has long been dominated by ancient, farming families each owning relatively small plots of land. Though these families had periodic disputes, the Jedi acted as lawmakers and peacekeepers, ensuring that no such disputes harmed the world's prosperity.   After the rise of Darth Revan and Darth Malak, the Jedi relocated their primary temple infrastructure to the Dantooine Enclave, hoping that distance from Coruscant would keep them free from war. During the last days of Darth Malak's offensive, he bombarded the Enclave from orbit, with the Jedi living there barely having time to escape with their lives. The Enclave was left in ruins. In the rush, many valuable artifacts and data were unable to be retrieved.   In the years that followed, Dantooine struggled with pirates and marauders who sought to take advantage of the power vacuum led by the Jedi. However, impressive leadership by Terena Adare - a local merchant who stepped up to act as Planetary Governor - and the intervention of a lone Jedi ensured that these marauders were driven off. Though at times pressured by the Republic-Sith Wars, the people of Dantooine held through, and have emerged on the other side as a united, strong nation.

Institutions

Dantooine's government is largely devolved. It operates based on a historical constitution defined by the Jedi, which sets criminal and civil laws very similar to those across most of the Galactic Republic. However, Dantooine's laws are localised; all on-world disputes are resolved by on-world courts, without rights of appeal. This localised legal system has long protected Dantooine from corporate takeovers and hostile entrepreneurs.   To manage day-to-day affairs, the landholders of Dantooine appoint a Planetary Governor, voting five-yearly with weighted votes based on land ownership. The Governor has offices in Khoonda, and manages a small civil service focused on law enforcement, judicial services and trade maintenance.

Locations of interest

The nominal capital of Dantooine is Khoonda - a settlement in the planet's southern equatorial zone, established after the destruction of the Jedi Enclave at the hands of Darth Malak. Khoonda was once home to many marauders and pirates, but has recently become a trade haven, driven by the growing Republic's booming demand for agricultural products. Beyond Khoonda there are no significant settlements; farmers from across Dantooine either conduct business from Khoonda, or operate their own ports and docks to export and import goods directly from their holdings.   Not far from Khoonda are the ruins of the Jedi Enclave: once the heart of the Jedi Order. During the Republic-Sith Wars, the Sith Lord Darth Malak bombarded the Enclave from orbit, leaving it and the surrounding township in ruins. Since then, it has largely played home to kath hounds and marauders - but Jedi vigilantes and pilgrims periodically venture into the structure in search of ancient knowledge or wisdom.   The vast swathes of flat plain beyond Khoonda are largely dominated by gentle hills and a great many farmsteads, known as the Khoonda Demense. However, it is said that nestled into these hills are the ancient kyber crystal caves once used by the Jedi for younglings' Gatherings - though if that is true, their location was lost to the Dantooinians with the destruction of the Enclave.

Environment

Dantooine's native flora is largely unexceptional, other than for the large blba trees which dot its plains (which resemble baobabs). However, the range of crops grown on Dantooine is vast, with many of the Galaxy's natural goods being in production on one farm or another.   Dantooine has several unusual native animals, including kath hounds, kinrath and iriaz. Kinrath (golden-yellow mantis, around the size of an average humanoid) tend to cluster in Dantooine's rare cave systems, while the gazelle-like iriaz readily roam those plains which are not dominated by farmsteads. Kath hounds, now the rarest of the unique native fauna, are said to be creatures corrupted by the Dark Side, which tend to find themselves making homes in the world's darker, more ominous places.
