Serenno

Serenno is an independent world in the Mid Rim, notable for its highly stable, long-standing and civilised society, low levels of criminal activity, and feudal-style government.

Geography

Serenno is a continental world with diverse biomes, ranging from freezing poles to wide oceans and vast plains. It is more wooded than most similar continental planets, growing large forests very quickly through a combination of rich soil and good humidity and atmosphere.

History

Serenno is a long-standing, human colony in the Mid Rim, one of the first major settlements during the Mid Rim Expansion. From its earliest days it has been dominated by the colonists who came on the initial settlement ships, having endured with a single political system since the world's earliest years.   Though off major hyperspace routes, Serenno soon became a renowned world in the Mid Rim for its relative stability and safety, enshrined with the early establishment of the Serennian Guard, a skilled police force and military. Its strategic alliances with nearby independent worlds has long ensured that, though not backed by a strong navy, Serenno was safe from conquests and raids.   During the Republic-Sith Wars, Serenno bargained its way into neutrality, avoiding direct conflict with the neighbouring Sith Empire while they focused on the Galactic Republic. This drained Serenno's wealth for some time, with heavy taxes and tariffs being paid to the Sith to avoid occupation. However, as a consequence, when the Republic recaptured the Mid Rim Serenno was better placed than most nearby worlds to establish itself even moreso as a stable centre for trade and commerce.

Institutions

Serenno's political institutions revolve around its eight great noble houses, dynasties which have persisted back to Serenno's founding. The throne of Serenno moves between these houses over time, with each dynasty ruling until the other seven houses unite to overthrow them. However, this relatively feudal model of governance is coupled with strongly liberal and communitarian tendencies, resulting in a cascade of wealth down from most of the noble houses to those living on their lands. Rights are well-guarded by the Serennian legal code, and nobles who treat those they employ poorly tend to face consequences from their compatriots.   This strong noble class has resulted in Serenno relying heavily on trade for its wealth, with the nobles largely spending their time engaged in hunting, games and leisure.

Locations of interest

Castle Serenno perches above the cliffs surrounding the capital city of Carannia, the world's main trade and political hub. Notwithstanding Carannia's importance, a number of other major settlements on Serenno - mainly those which are seats of the eight great noble houses - are comparably significant to Carannia, resulting in a devolution of wealth and power across the planet.

Environment

Serenno's diverse biomes lend themselves to a diversity of life, including tall, sweeping oak and pine trees and a breadth of mammals, birds and insects. Serenno's forests are notably beautiful and distinct, and are the major source of industrial wealth for the world. Among its animals are a range of impressive carnivores which are just deadly enough to make for impressive hunting, including the near-extinct draconid, colloquially known as the Snatchwander.
