Jedi Master
The wisest and strongest of Jedi Knights attain the rank of Master. These individuals wield powers that even Jedi Knights have trouble fathoming. Their deep connection to The Force influences their every move. Promotion to the rank of Master requires the recognition of current masters and falsely claiming the title is tantamount to heresy.
Qualifications
The attainment of Jedi Master is a testament to the power and wisdom accumulated over a lifetime of seeking knowledge. Simply possessing raw power does not grant the title. A true Jedi Master demonstrates mastery with an aspect of leveraging The Force.
Requirements
There is no set of codified requirements for elevation to Jedi Master. Current Jedi Masters, both on the High Council and not, must recognize a Jedi Knight as being worthy of the title. A Knight may demonstrate prowess on the battlefield, expert skills in mediation or diplomacy, or have unlocked some deep secret of The Force.
Duties
Jedi Masters may be called to serve on a Council (or even the High Council on Tython ), but most Jedi Masters just work on missions that are too sensitive for Jedi Knights to handle.
History
During the Great Sith Wars some Jedi Knights would self declare themselves as Jedi Masters. They fell into the common mistake that combat ability alone makes one a master. Following each of these wars some faux Masters would recognize the errors of their ways and either step down or be declared a Master by their peers. However other faux Masters would end ostracized and treated as renegades.
Cultural Significance
Most citizens don't know the difference between a Jedi Knight and a Jedi Master, but those that do recognize a Master will bestow any honors upon that person.
