Personal history
R2-A3 (since his last mind wipe) was “born” as the personal astromech droid to Jedi Knight Lon Carlo, and often assigned to assisting his Padawan Lucas Gorge, and became quite fond of the boy as he grew up. When Lucas was 18, Darth Vader destroyed the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, and while his master fought Vader in the hall of records, Lucas was overcome with fear, and ran and hid. The darkside clouded Vader’s vision and kept the boy hidden until the Dark Lord left, at which time the now fallen jedi came out of hiding and met up with the droid. Gorge found his master’s robe and lightsaber, but no body. He assumed Vader had killed him. The truth was, that Lon Carlo used the dark side to fake his own death, and revealed himself to R2-FU after the battle, he knew that he had done wrong and must now go into seclusion to cleanse the darkside taint, so he told R2 to look after the boy.
R2-A3 or Ace, as he was affectionately known, did his level best to keep the boy out of trouble, but watched him, without guidance, degenerate into a drunk who used the force to influence the odds in gambling and fist fights. Even with the force, he drank more than he earned gambling, so he eventually tried to sell Ace for money for Rum and Death Sticks. That is when Ace had enough and snuck off, grabbed the padawan and his master’s lightsabers and buggered off into Coruscant, stealing a speeder to get away.
From there, he got passage on an outbound freighter after helping the captain with some repairs. The captain, a human named Random Young and his wife Harmony, were a bit of free spirits and believed in droid sentience, so they never put a restraining bolt on him. When the Jade Falcon, Random’s freighter was stopped and boarded by an Imperial Customs Frigate, the Captain didn’t like the look of the hippie couple and seized the ship as a smuggler craft. Ace didn’t know if they were smugglers or not, but he was not a good judge of character in his opinion.
As Imperial property, he was sent for a mind wipe, but he used his probe to hotwire the mind wiper so that it wouldn’t work. With the hotwire, Ace accidentally created a security droid program installer that instead of wiping his mind, tried to install security droid protocols over his existing personality. This left Ace with a split personality, though even his base personality changed. Ace was still ace, he just was…mouthy. He now had a short fuse and an attitude problem. However, he was also savvy enough to hide those lesser qualities while anyone of importance might be paying attention. As for the split personality, Ace discovered that under dangerous circumstances, the security droid protocols would override his “healthy sense of self preservation” and cause him to do all sorts of brave things. Furthermore, certain portions of his programming were locked off and others awakened during these crises.
R2-FU, as he now called himself, has come to grips with these personality shifts, but sort of views them like a mental illness and tries not to talk about it.
Ace is slightly terrified of his "Dark Side" and keeps it a secret from everyone.
After serving aboard the customs frigate for the remainder of the Clone Wars, R2-FU was retired from service and sold to the Hutts as scrap, who subsequently sold the droid to a Twi-lek technician on Tattooine, named Vin Vida, whose daughter was away at the Jedi Temple, and Ace didn’t have the heart to tell him about the attack. So, when he found out about it, he and his second wife, Elaina (the first being Xsosa’s mother who died birthing her), were devastated.
So, you can imagine everyone’s (including Ace’s) surprise when Xsosa showed up on the doorstep, having survived Order 66. Xsosa was immediately in love with the droid, and the feeling was quite mutual so Ace convinced Vin to give him to his techie daughter, by revealing his security programming and showing him his hidden blaster.
Xsosa and Ace, as his friends now call him, have been inseparable ever since. She has yet to learn his dark secret.

Holo to Master Vida
<holo springs to life revealing Ace>
Beedoowop brrupt dweezle grong...
Sorry that was binary, my bad!
I hope this holo finds you and your wife well and free of imperial hands. I am well thank you for your consideration. Xsosa has found herself as a sort of spiritual advisor and voice of reason to the group and everyone likes her. One person, in my opinion, is a little too fond of Xsosa, and he has her confounded with his charms. Since getting involved with Xsosa, I have found him in the bed of every other female, wookiee or not, that is on the ship and there are a few. Xsosa seems to be swallowing her feelings about this, but if she starts crying, rest assured, I'll space the meatbag.
Anyway, I have learned much and upgraded my programming many times, I think you would be impressed
Your humble Servant
Ace
Oh, yeah, just send word and the scum is as good as out of her life, in a permanent way.
I eagerly await your instruction.
