  • Easy. Very common language
  • Average. Fairly common language
  • Hard. Uncommon language
  • Formidable. Rare or unusual language
  • Daunting. Extremely rare or old language
Boosts or setbacks based on character's background and experiences.
   

Successes Determine what Aspects of the Language you Know

 
  • Failure means your character cannot speak, understand, read or write the language.
  • 1 Success you can understand spoken words.
  • 2 Success you can also speak the language.
  • 3 Success you can also read the language.
  • 4 Success you can also write the language.

Advantages or Threats Determines Your Level of Fluency

 
  • 3 Threats you make offensive blunders or completely misunderstand things
  • 2 Threats you mistake or mispronounce words regularly
  • 1 Threats you know only the most common words and phrases; you communicate like a child
  • Neutral you understand just enough to get by
  • 1 Advantages you have a conversational understanding of the language
  • 2 Advantages you can understand and/or communicate moderately complex topics
  • 3 Advantages you are very fluent
  • 4 Advantages you understand idioms like a native, all subtext is clear
 

Triumphs Give Added Bonuses

 
  • Triumph with Success means your character can operate like a native in whatever knowledge they have e.g. understands idioms, no accent, knows dialects or perfect script
  • Triumph with Failure means your character can communicate through educated guesses, they cobble together words to sort of understand or communicate. They can make an Education check as the same difficulty each time they want to read, speak or understand this language
