Jedi Master Toris Crell uncovered information about the clone army secretly being developed on Kamino at nearly the same time as Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi. His investigation converged with Grand Master Yoda arriving to the site in person -- too late to put a stop to the activation of the Grand Army of the Republic, too late to have any chance of getting certain answers.
Master Crell stayed behind on Kamino to poke around anyway.
As part of his investigation, Crell made gentle inquiries of the Kaminoan doctors who had not been involved in this particular army cloning project. Two of them agreed to a quiet little side project, a single cloning experiment as a "proof of concept". They did not particularly care that the source material for their single clone was Jedi Master Mace Windu.
Nor that Master Windu knew nothing of this. And would never have given permission for such an experiment.
Nor that Master Crell was acting entirely in secret by this time, guided by disturbing visions of the future.
Once the "proof of concept" clone was developed but not yet awakened from its tank, Master Crell smuggled it into the transport vessel assigned to his old padawan Jedi Knight Ambrose Brunig, intended to travel along the Rimma Trade Route past Thyferra but destined never to complete that trip.
