What is humanity without the ability to create, the ability to cultivate land, or the ability to keep ourselves alive? These skills are dying in an age of technology and automation. Here, we protect them for future generations.
History
Childhood and Inspirations
Linda Roseclaw grew up in a rural part of Europe during the time where the human population begin to diminish, and those who remained began to group together in the capital cities. Because of this, Linda was taught skills that (when she grew up) she realized were not shared with those outside her community. These skills were activities such as gardening, carpentry, cooking and building. Her parents encouraged her to engage with the world around her during an age where the world began to rely more and more on technology.Adulthood and Work
Linda grew up, got married and had her own children. During this time she also moved, along with most of her village, to London (which became the main population hub for Europe, until the population became solely contained in America a few hundred years later). She held on to the skills she had been taught, but as her children grew, she realized that those skills were not something they knew. The education system focused on skills such as computing, mathematics and science, while practical skills were neglected in favour of automated technologies. Why would children need to learn how to build furniture, cook food, or harvest crops when technology could do so for them? Linda disagreed with this, and believed that with the rise of technology, the essence of humanity was dying.Founding Figures
Lifetime Achievements
Shortly before her death, Linda received a prestigious award for her work in preserving human history and her dedication to educating others. She was nominated for this award by her colleagues at The School of Forgotten Learning.Lifetime Achievements
Martin Roseclaw is famous for his writing. Throughout his life he published several books on the topics of teaching, nature and the outdoors. He was also one of the few people who continued to publish physical books after traditional publishers moved to a digital only format in 2500.Purpose
The school of Forgotten Learning began as an idea of Rose's when she began to taught her neighbour's daughter how to bake. She realised that even though the skills of the past had been forgotten by the education system, those that still knew them could teach them instead. Initially, she and her husband began to tutor the neighbourhood's children in various trades (including gardening, carpentry and baking) from their own home. Soon, word got out and the couple found themselves overrun with applications, and no space to teach in. Through the help of community fundraising (in 2845) a building was purchased and The School of Forgotten Learning was officially opened. Staff were all members of the community with unique knowledge in a skill or trade, and pupils could register for one or more courses of their choice. The Matterson Controversy
The Old School
Linda continued to run the school until her death in 2871. In the months leading up to her death, she became fiercely protective over the legacy she had created and became increasingly paranoid towards technology. What started as a dream to introduce traditional skills back into society, ended as a hatred of anything new; even when it greatly benefited society.
During this time, she was approached by many members of the faculty who thought that the school should move online in order to reach more pupils. However, Linda refused and sometimes even released those staff from their employment in order to protect herself from their ideas.
She became so paranoid that she was damaging the culture she had tried so much to create, and her fear of technology prevented her from seeing how it could be used to further her goals.
Just standing in that auditorium again made me think of her, to carry on her legacy without her hurts me too much. Not to mention the costs of running a place like this...
Linda's Last Award
A few months before her death, Linda won an award for her contributions to education and history. Despite many of her colleagues feeling less than friendly towards her during this time, many still put forward their nomination for her.
They wanted to celebrate the community she had created and the impact it had had, even if Linda was unconsciously sabotaging it.
Archie Matterson
Lifetime Achievements
Archie Matterson made his fortune through ground-breaking, online entrepreneurism before he took over as head of the School of Forgotten Learning in 2872. He revolutionised the school by moving it online and making it accessible to as many people as possible. The New School
Origins
A year after Linda's death, her children were approached by Archie Matterson, a wealthy billionaire who wanted to buy the school from them. They agreed as they wanted to continue their mother's but couldn't cope with running the school on their own. Archie continued the day to day running of the school for another six months before deciding to make a radical change. He sold off the property owned by the school and moved the school online so its classes could be accessed by many more student. This was positive for the school in general, however a few outliers felt like Matterson had ruined Linda's legacy. Despite this, the school grew in popularity over the years, and with Matterson's help managed to teach skills to a whole new generation of children and young people through its online learning platform.Table of Contents
