Discovery and History

Spacesuits have existed since humans first went to space. They were a way to protect humans from the unpredictable elements of space, and most importantly, provide them with the oxygen that they needed to breathe. They are not a new technology, and when the spaceflight ban came into place, they became obsolete. Nobody was going to space, so they weren't needed.   When the spaceflight ban was lifted, it was a long time before humans were sent into space again. People were cautious, they only had the information of their ancestors to guide them. Even after technology advanced to a point were spacesuits were not necessary inside a Spaceship, they remained a key part of the inventory and were needed for any missions outside of a ship.

Elements and Maintenance

Elements

Spacesuits have three main systems: communications, water, and oxygen. Oxygen is needed for the occupant to be able to breath whilst in the vacuum of space. Water is needed for hydration, but also for temperature management within the suit. Finally, communications systems are needed for astronauts to communicate both with each other and with potential land based teams or other members of their crew.

Maintenance

Spacesuits need almost constant maintenance in order to ensure their safety. Because of this, they are very expensive and have a short lifespan. A spacesuit will only last one mission before it returns to earth. Spacesuits have been known to last longer, but after this time there becomes an increased risk of danger to the astronaut if they choose to wear it.

How to Safety Check Your Spacesuit

Remember COW:

  • Communications
  • Oxygen
  • Water

  • If any of these are broken or not functioning correctly, DO NOT leave your spacecraft!
