You did WHAT?!
I drove down to the next city, in one of those old car things...
Do you know how destructive they are? There's a reason why cars aren't used anymore.
— a conversation between two humans

History

Around the same time that the spaceflight ban was introduced, scientists began to realise that the Earth was in a lot of danger. Emmisions from vehicles such as planes, trains and cars were negatively effecting the environment. As part of a global environmental project (which aimed to protect earth) they moved all that was left of the decaying population to one location, and left nature to take over the rest of the Earth. The aim of this was to reduce a need for travel, for both people and good, and to hoepfully reduce the human impact on the environment.

Impact

Due to this, the need for transport gradually filtered out of society over a few generations. Even though driving had not specifically banned (as it was still neccessary for goods to be transported between cities) it became an activity available only to those who had a lot of money. Drivers were generally looked down upon in disgust because it felt like they were not trying to preserve the Earth for future generations.

Cars

On average, it is believed that around only 100 functioning cars exist on Earth. They are either owned by the incredibly rich, or by the goverment and related agencies. Some people, make a living from restoring historic cars that were left to rust in the abandoned cities and selling them for extortionate prices. This proffesion is illegal, however for some, the benefits outweigh the risks.
