Windswept Haven


Windswept Haven is the Western-most City in the Kingdom of the Haizan. It is located on the Continental Bridge, in an area know as the Zephyr Highlands.

Windswept Haven is a melting pot of different ethnic groups, with Haizan being the largest group but also a significant population of Dwarves and Zodaskhans. The city is ruled by a council of merchants who govern through trade guilds. The shipbuilding industry is a significant contributor to the economy, known for building strong and sturdy ships that can withstand the harsh winds and tumultuous seas of the region. The city also boasts a unique fishing trade, with exclusive species of fish found in the waters around the city.

Demographics

Windswept Haven is a melting pot of different ethnic groups: Haizan is the largest group, but the city is also home to a significant number of Dwarves and Zodaskhans. Each of these ethnic groups bring their own unique customs, traditions, and history, adding to the diverse and rich cultural tapestry of the city.

Government

The city is ruled by a council of merchants, who govern the city through a system of trade guilds. The guild leaders are elected to the ruling council by a system of republic elections that considers the vote of the lowest merchant and citizen. The elections are routine and are tabulated every lunar cycle, but Guild Leaders and ruling council change less frequently: Guild Leaders serve a minimum of one year and the ruling council serve at least three lunar cycles. As leadership votes are more of an record ongoing record than a election, transitions do not occur at a set-time.   The current guild leaders are:

Defences

Windswept Haven lacks the traditional defensive walls of a normal city. Instead, the city features a singular Western facing wall that was originally built during the time of the scourge war, before the cities conception. 
What the city lacks in fortification it makes up with an organized defense force and superior military engineering. Parapets are spaced throughout the city and manned by Archers; the costal defense force boasts more military power than any other city in the world, and miltary forces retain the proficiency to deploy minor fortifications on order.

Industry & Trade

Windswept Haven is known for its rich fishing trade, thanks to the variety of exotic fish species found in the waters surrounding the city. The fish found here are not found anywhere else in the world, making them a valuable commodity for traders and merchants. The local shipbuilding guild, known as "The Wavebreakers", have built specialized ships that can withstand the harsh winds and storms of the region, allowing for year-round fishing. The guild also employs unique methods for catching fish, such as using enchanted nets and harpoons that can only be found in Windswept Haven. These methods have helped the city establish itself as a major player in the fishing industry and the guild has become one of the most successful and profitable in the city.

Shipbuilding

  The shipbuilding process in Windswept Haven is a highly skilled and labor-intensive endeavor that requires a deep understanding of the properties of different materials, as well as the principles of ship design and construction. The shipwrights first start by selecting the finest local hardwoods, such as oak and ash, which are then carefully shaped and crafted into the keel, ribs, and planking of the ship. These are then reinforced with iron fittings and decked with the finest pine. The final step is the enchanting of the ship, to make it more resistant to the storms that plague the sea around the city.

The harbor of Windswept Haven is a bustling hub of activity, overseen by the Haizan merchant, Li Min. The network of canals and waterways in Windswept Haven is overseen by the Haizan engineer, Zhi Yuan. The canals are used to transport goods and people throughout the city, and are an important part of the city's infrastructure.   The massive lighthouse that guides ships into port is overseen by the Haizan mage, Mei Ling. The lighthouse is a towering structure that can be seen for miles around. It is enchanted to guide ships safely into port, even in the worst storms. The light from the lighthouse can be seen for miles, and it is a symbol of the city's strength and resilience.

Shipbuilders Faction- "The Shipwrights of the Storms" - This guild is responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of ships and boats in Windswept Haven. They are known for building ships that are strong and capable of dealing with the storms and wild winds of the region, making them highly sought after by merchants and sailors alike. The guild is headed by a council of master shipwrights, who oversee the work of the guild's members and ensure that the ships produced meet the highest standards of quality and safety.

The Merchant's Faction regulates trade and commerce within the city, and also controls the city's trade routes with other kingdoms. It is comprised of the following guilds:
  1. Blacksmiths Guild - "The Anvil-Bearers of Metal" - The guild is responsible for the production of metal goods and services such as weapons, armor, tools and other metal objects.

  5. Glassblowers Guild - "The Glass-Shapers of Light" - This guild is responsible for the production of glass objects such as windows, mirrors, and various glassware.
  6. Weavers Guild - "The Weavers of Fabric" - The guild focus on the production of textiles and fabrics such as clothes, curtains and other textiles goods.
  7. Alchemists Guild - "The Elixir-Makers of the City" - This guild deals with the production of alchemical goods such as potions, elixirs, and other alchemical items.
  8. Jewelers Guild - "The Gem-Crafters of Beauty" - The guild is responsible for the production of jewelry, gem cutting and other precious items.
  9. Spice Merchants Guild - "The Spice-Merchants of Flavor" - The guild focuses on the trading and production of spices and herbs.
  10. Silk Merchants Guild - "The Silk-Weavers of Luxury" - The guild is focused on the trading and production of silk and other related goods.

The Lighthouse Keepers Faction - "The Guides of the Sea" - This guild is responsible for the maintenance of the city's lighthouse and the ships traffic in the harbor.


The Military Faction is responsible for the over defense of the city. They administrate the formation of military and guard units, and oversee the deployment of units. Soldiers are trained and provided by subordinate guilds:
  1. The Magician's Guild - "The Keepers of the Arcane" - This guild is made up of powerful wizards and sorcerers who provide magical services for the city's inhabitants, and are controlled by the ruler.
  2. Archer's Guild - "The Marksmen of the Wind" - This guild trains and employs skilled archers for the city's defense and hunting.
  3. Martial Arts Guild - "The Warriors of the Storm" - This guild trains and employs skilled martial artists for the city's defense and law enforcement.
  4. Military Command Guild - "The Generals of the Tempest" - This guild trains and employs experienced military leaders to command the city's defense forces.
  5. Weapons Guild - "The Smiths of the Tempest" - This guild trains Soldiers on various weapons employed by the City's Guard and Defense Forces.
  6. Mage's Guild - "The Sorcerers of the Wind" - This guild trains and employs skilled mages for the city's defense and magical services.
  7. Sailors Guild - "The Navigators of the Storm" - This guild trains and employs skilled sailors for the city's ships and fleet, responsible for navigation, weather forecasting, and maintenance of ships.

History

The shipbuilding industry in Windswept Haven has always been at the forefront of innovation. This is due in large part to the contributions of Ting Wu, the first Shipmaster, who revolutionized the process by introducing a new type of composite material for the girders which increased the strength and stability of ships. Jie Fang, another Shipmaster, developed the set of tests to evaluate a ship's performance in rough seas. This inspired others to standardize plans, parts, and processes. Lan Chen, developed a new technique for attaching planking to the ship's hull eliminating a bulk of production time and pushing production capability far beyond any competitor. These advancements were critical in making the ships built in windswept city to be known as the strongest and most capable of dealing with the storms and wild winds of the region, making them highly sought after by merchants and sailors alike.

Today, shipbuilding remains an integral part of Windswept Haven's economy and culture. The city's shipwrights continue to build ships that are not just functional, but also beautiful and full of character. The ships are not only used for trading with other ports across the kingdom, but also a proud representation of the city's heritage and skill.
