Personal history
Alex was born Alexander Thomas Whitley to Henrietta Whitley. Her fiance, Elbert Wagner, had left her upon finding out she was pregnant. Henrietta tried to care for her son, but ultimately decided to send him on one of the orphan trains when he was seven. However, the train was attacked by a crew of pirates, who either took the children on as forced labor, or left them in the wreckage. Alex was one of the former.
Despite his young age, Alex earned the respect of most of the other children, as well as many of the pirates. He quickly became one of the most trusted slaves of the pirates, while also gaining a reputation for helping out other kids.
At thirteen, Alex led a group of children, all his age or younger, in a mutiny. They managed to overthrow the captain, and killed every pirate aboard. Many of the older kids didn't want to follow someone Alex's age, and chose to leave. He let them. Anyone who wanted to leave, he let walk away.
Within a few months, Alex and his band of kids were infamous rail pirates, with their train, the Renegade. As the years went on, Alex himself became regarded as one of the most dangerous pirates on the rails. When he was around fifteen, he earned the name Huntsman, for the way he would hunt people all over the rails, no matter how long it took.
The practice of raiding orphan trains for slaves quickly died out after Alex became known as the Huntsman. He was renowned for attacking trains that did so, and giving the stolen children a choice between staying with his crew, going to wherever the train was taking them, or heading somewhere to start a new life.
Education
Alex has a surprisingly good education. He didn't recieve much as a young child, but he proved himself so useful to his captors that the captain ordered the crew to teach him at least what a child his age would learn in school.
