On naming of things

Everything needs names. Obviously, that's how things are. And, if you've read a few of my articles, there's plenty of names to go around. Then, you may be wondering how I've chosen these names. Well here's how.   Not much thought.   Really, I have very little actual thought behind names. But that doesn't mean there's no patterns anywhere. No, there are.   Some examples;
  • Rakt'Aklan names are usually pretty rough-sounding, with lots of apostrophies, As, Ks, Rs, and Hs. There's also Khar'Ak 'Than, Kar'Rak'Ak' Than and Shur'Kattr' Astak.
  • The inhabitants of Jett are usually also have some rough sounds, Koros, Kosmaellon, Tekr, Tarno Skenret.
  •   But aside from these small patterns, most of the names I've just thought of something, and adjusted it to make sense. Still, there's some language basis there. Most non-English names, Cellea, Ochtotne Prime, Shioyi, Corlaen, Kalla Ionem and so on, can all be explained as having been settled by people who don't speak English as their native language. The English colonies can be explained with originally british, american, australian and the like, settlers, and their colonies and so on. These people would settle colonies like Endured Wrath, Shajuma's Reprise, Starstruck and Trepidationary.   That's the planet and habitat names, now onto one of my favourites. Ship names. Here, I've drawn inspiration from a variety of sources. The three notable ones however are the Revelation Space series by Alastair Reynolds, the Culture series by Ian M. Banks, and Halo. The style is similar, with plenty of names that are usually multi-word, and somewhat poetic. Examples from those works include the Nostalgia For Infinity, the Forward Unto Dawn, the Gnostic Ascencion, and so on. Human space is big, though, and a lot of different styles exist anyway, so not all names follow this formula.   Here's some of my favourites. The Kalameet, The Star-Reaver, the Titanic Lance, the Outlier, With Good Cause and the Regardless of Purpose. Some of these names are references to other material, the Kalameet is a reference to a boss, Black Dragon Kalameet, from Dark Souls' DLC, the March of Profits is a track name in Stellaris' soundtrack, the Quaiche is the name of one of Absolution Gap's main characters , the Campbell-class of ship is a reference to Colonel Roy Campbell, from the Metal Gear series, notably MGS1.   Character names are significantly less thought out. In fact, there's barely any thought into them, I just... came up with them. Well, not completely. Stringer, Mad and Nex have been names I've used for a while. The kings of Anakrion also take on new names, each of which involve the word "Rex", latin for king, in them. That's where Rexilis and Rexaen came from.   That's another quick-ish rant to explain some of my thought processes in naming things. I hope you enjoyed my disjointed ramblings.
