Saccharine Snow

This small, nondescript leather-bound book is one of a popular children's story throughout the Eastern Rahulik Empire and the Kingdom of Kessin. It tells the story of a sad catfolk child's journey to the magical village of Saccharine.
It was revealed by Marienne Limnus that the book bears the secret dedication "For K. K."

Saccharine Snow

In the woods of Hargålthrine

Lies the merry village Saccharine.

A paradise of dreams divine—

That oh so sanguine Saccharine.

And through fog and dreary bog,

One early morning's quaff,

It was for Saccharine, oh so sweet,

That Kaleen Krim set off.

Through the squishy swamp of things

That lived so long ago,

Through the Hargålthrine's great rings,

She trudged towards Saccharine's snow.

Through the cracks, past Slithersnacks,

Past roots and howling gale.

She marched until she saw the glow

Of Saccharine in the dale.

"Welcome child," the Lady said,

When Kaleen Krim stepped forth.

"Your fur is iced and ears are red,

Kissed by your travels north.

Come, dear kitten, remove thy mitten,

And comfort shall be had.

For Saccharine is a cozy place

Where none are cold nor sad."

And it was so, for Kaleen took

Her wraps from hands and feet

Yet found she never sneezed nor shook,

Upon that Saccharine street.

And down the way, she saw them play;

Children just like her!

"Was this not so," the Lady asked,

"In the other place you were?"

"No," Kaleen said, "No not one bit,

My brothers were too cruel.

They pulled my tail, and scratched, and spit

Their curses and their drool!"

The Lady laughed—Oh how she laughed

A reassuring sound.

"Well worry not, my little one,"

We won't let them around."

Kaleen laughed and left to play,

Bounding down the lane,

And wonders sprang throughout the day;

Again and then again.

The buildings were candies! The children; dandies!

It always seemed to snow,

And she knew she could live for'ere

Beneath the Saccharine snow.

But trouble stirred beyond fells.

And, as trouble often brings,

It brought a pair of ne'er do wells

Past Saccharine's great rings.

Kalsom! Druthers! Kaleen's brothers

Had followed her that day.

If Kaleen found wonders there

Then so, they thought, would they.

-

They smashed mint trees and toffee bricks,

And gobbled Gram's front door!

They terrorized with might and tricks,

And wanted more and more.

But they'd not planned their blood to stand,

And Kaleen stood her ground.

"Go," she said, "And leave this place!"

And no one made a sound.

-

Then they laughed, her brothers there,

"You think that we will go!?"

And from dark of never-where,

A whisper; "I think so."

The Lady came and made them lame—

They howled as quillips do,

And said with firm authority,

"This place is not for you."

-

The children cheered as they both pled.

Hanging Druthers from a tree.

To Slithersnacks was Kalsom fed

And Kaleen Krim was free.

They all ate sweets and cheery treats,

As Saccharine seemed glow.

A Kaleen lived forever glad

Beneath the Saccharine Snow.

For all once sad can be made glad,

Beneath the Saccharine Snow.
