Burstan

Burstan is a nation on Western Geiddnir, set on it's northeastern extreme. Burstan is a harsh, cold northern land covered in the snow and ice of a winter that has lasted centuries. The snow never melts, and almost as omnipresent as the snow and ice, is the feeling of dread that pervades the nation, for as harsh and unforgiving as the land is, it is nothing compared to those who rule it.

History

Burstan was founded 500 years prior to the fall of the elemental titans. Two clans had left their home in Mariana for they thought, correctly, that it would soon be swallowed by the sea. Burstan is named after Bur the Settler, the old leader of Dearngs Clan who died on the journey from Stormgard. Her descendants became the royal family of Burstan.   Generals like Jareld and Mertin Proished brought the nation great prestige, but over time this dwindled. The effectiveness of the nation was hampered by the fact that all decisions had to go via the monarch him/herself. A council was created as a way around this, but the various groups in the nation tried to dominate it, which led to a split in the council and further splintering led to the factionalism that has plagued Burstan.   Early in its history, Burstan was weak and decentralized. Royal mage Gwen Thuntimp had to rely on willpower and charisma to keep the various factions of wizards in control, the nation's military was split up into many different groups and the duke's policy was mainly dictated by the merchants of Silreak.   This all changed when Irsh Avram, the unofficial leader of the military, became disgruntled over the state his beloved Burstan was in and the fact that Duke Karev would not unite the military and make Avram its general. Aided by the necromancer Dulkav he formed the Knights of Proished and attempted a coup. The coup failed and the Knights were turned into zombified minions of Dulkav, but the cleansing of the military top allowed Karev to take firm control and to merge the various factions into one army led by General Scorlis. With Dulkav as the common enemy, Karev also managed to rally all the merchant and mage factions behind him and even made an alliance with the Migland barbarians with whom Burstan had been in conflict for generations.
