Desert Fever cure
Desert dwellers are regularly afflicted with a disease that settles in the lungs and is known as Desert Fever. It results in a fever, cough, tiredness, and a rash on the lower legs which may spread to the chest and back. It commonly also afflicts sufferers with chills, night sweats, headaches and joint pain. It can take months to recover from its effects, or even be fatal.
Healers identified the probable cause after careful study of sufferers: A type of mould growing in the sandy soil surrounding an oasis can erupt with a puff of toxic spores when it is disturbed by activities such as digging in or tilling contaminated soil, or animals grazing too vigorously.
Having identified the source of the sickness, the healers had to find a way of stopping it. One apothecary in the town of Bralizzar accidentally made the chance discovery that extracts from certain plants would kill fungi, and further research demonstrated that these extracts were both reasonably safe and would work on fungal infections in the body.
Amira Kanja, Bralizzari apothecary, was in the process of refining essential extracts from some of the plants in her herbarium to investigate their properties in enhancing health when she had a small accident and made the momentous discovery. While carrying a rack of vials of extract she tripped and the vials went flying. Several landed amidst dishes of moulds she was cultivating for another experiment, and she lamented having to restart both experiments again as she put aside the dishes to clean.
The next morning, Amira returned to her laboratory to finish the cleaning process, only to discover that the moulds had died in several of the dishes which had been exposed to the extracts. She swiftly realised what this mean for the treatment of the many fungal infections which affect humans and related species of humanoids. A series of careful experiments duplicated the results, and now she is contacting fellow researchers to have them confirm her findings.
